One World Battleground: Laibach and "Dogs of War"

Happy Halloween! Today's random tune is by Slovenian avant-garde music group Laibach. The musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst, an art collective, Laibach plays music that fits into the industrial, martial and neo-classical genres of music. The group has often been controversial due to their use of iconography that references totalitarianism, nationalism and militarism. Their music was often banned in the former Yugoslavia, but achieved international recognition through regular European tours. Since Slovenia's independence they have been embraced as a cultural icon in the country. They are especially known for covers of well-known songs that subvert, through music and video imagery, the original lyrics meaning. They have been accused of both far-right and far-left sympathies, a result of the ambiguity they achieve in their interpretative works. This song, a cover of Pink Floyd's Dogs of War, is from their 1994 cover album NATO. The album covers songs with the theme of war, such as Edwin Starr's 1970 classic War, and Europe's The Final Countdown.

Rapping Ukraine: DakhaBrakha and "Karpatskyi rep"

ДахаБраха, or DakhaBrakha, brings us our random tune for today, called Карпатський реп, or Karpatskyi rep, or Carpathian Rap. A band from Ukraine, they present avant-garde music in the styles of several different areas of the world, including the Ukraine, India, Arabia, Africa, Russia and Australia, complete with instrumentation from those areas. DakhaBrakha's name is a combination of two Ukrainian words meaning "give" and "take." All the groups members are graduates of the Kiev National University of Culture and Arts, and DakhaBrakha was originally a project of the avant-garde theater project called Dakh. This theatricality is embodied in their shows, including their on-stage costuming. Karpatskyi rep can be found on their 2014 album Light.

It's All Greek to Me: Savina Yannatou & Primavera en Salonico with "Sumiglia" and "Radile"

You get a little more bang for your random tune buck today. The randomizer picked the song Radile by Savina Yannatou & Primavera en Salonico, but the only video I could find was concert footage that included their song Sumiglia also. Savina Yannatou is a renowned Greek singer who has teamed up with Greek jazz and traditional musicians Primavera en Salonico to explore at first Sephardic and Mediterreanean music but has since expanded to include music from around the world. Starting out with classical guitar lessons, Yannatou began studying singing and later completed postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Her repertoire is mainly Greek music, though she has also made forays into free jazz and avant-garde. She also is a songwriter and composer for theater, dance and video. Sumiglia can be found on the 2005 album Sumiglia by Savina Yannatou and Primavera en Salonico. Radile can be found on their 2008 album Songs of an Other.
