Who Will Listen: Moya Brennan and "No One Talks"

Our random tune for today is sung by Moya Brennan. A native to Ireland, Brennan comes from a musical family (one of her sisters, Eithne, is better known as the singer Enya) and the family's band Clannad have been credited with creating the contemporary Celtic sound. Brennan is the eldest of the siblings, and started her own solo career in 1992. She is often classified as Celtic or New Age, though she feels uncomfortable with the New Age label as her music often has Christian themes. She has recorded 25 solo albums, her music has been featured in film, and she has collaborated with numerous other musicians in a variety of genres. She has also been very candid about her life - in her autobiography The Other Side of the Rainbow she recounts her upbringing in her family and her struggles with alcohol, drugs and an abortion which made her reevaluate her life and become a committed Christian. To help others with similar problems, she has given much to philanthropic endeavors and is a Goodwill Ambassador for the Christian Blind Mission. This song, No One Talks, can be found on her album Signature (2006) and on her 2011 live album Heart Strings.

Profound Love: Charanga Cakewalk and "Amor Profundo"

Our song for today is performed by Charanga Cakewalk and is called Amor Profundo. Charanga Cakewalk is the brainchild of Michael Ramos. Ramos is a Latino Chicano Mexican who also describes himself as a citizen of the world. A once sideman and rocker who played with John Mellencamp, Paul Simon, Patty Griffin and others and was a sometime member of the BoDeans and The Rembrandts, he maintained a keen interest in the Latino music of his childhood. Ramos has made Charanga Cakewalk the leading proponent of a style called cumbia lounge. Within his musical landscapes, you might hear tejano, flamenco, merengue, salsa, garage rock, ska and reggaeton. Charanga Cakewalk has released three albums. Amor Profundo is from his 2006 album Chicano Zen.

A Melange: Väsen with Mike Marshall and Darol Anger and "Misch Masch"

Some American folk musicians mingle with Swedish folk musicians to create today's random tune, Misch Masch. Väsen is a Swedish folk music ensemble formed officially in 1990 for a music gathering in Norway. Väsen plays traditional instruments such as the nyckelharpa but it was adding a guitar that gave the band a unique sound. They play on this song with American mandolin player Mike Marshall, a leader in the New Acoustic Music movement that blends folk, bluegrass, jazz and world music. Also featured on the song is Marshall's longtime collaborator Darol Anger, an American violinist with an extensive background in jazz, folk and classical music. Misch Masch can be found on the 2007 album Mike Marshall & Darol Anger with Väsen.

Harem is a Turkish percussion group that use traditional instruments such as dumbeks, bendirs, shakers, tef, and zils as well as world percussion instruments like djembes, bongos, and tablas. Buy Local: Baloji and L'Orchestre de la Katuba with Kuku and "Buy Africa"

Baloji, along with L'Orchestre de la Katuba and Kuku, brings us the random tune for today called Buy Africa off of the Red Hot + Fela album from 2013. Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Baloji is a Belgian rapper, MC and hip hop artist who got his start as a founder of the hip hop band Starflam in the early 1990s where he was known as MC Balo. The band's second album went platinum, but differences with the other members led Baloji to leave the group and quit music in 2004. However, after discovering a letter from his estranged Congolese mother, and after winning a poetry contest in Paris, he took up music again in 2006 and released an autobiographical solo debut album which included a response to his mother - the album went gold and won numerous awards. L'Orchestre de la Katuba appears to be an orchestra that he put together, and features Congolese guitarist Dizzy Mandkeku. Kuku is a Nigerian-American singer-songwriter living in Paris. Buy Africa was originally released by Fela Ransome Kuti and his Africa 70 in 1971, and is an exhortation to Africans to buy African-made goods rather than foreign goods. The album Red Hot + Fela is a tribute to Fela Kuti's musical work, the second such tribute by the Red Hot organization in a series of albums meant to raise money and awareness of global HIV/AIDS (Fela Kuti died of AIDS related complications in 1997).

Change of Heart: Modena City Ramblers and "Al Dievel / La Marcia del Diavolo"

Today's random tune is by Italian band Modena City Ramblers. Started as a hobby in 1991 by a group of friends that wanted to play Irish music together, the Modena City Ramblers (or MCR) is an Italian folk band heavily influenced by Celtic themes and is often classified as folk rock. A band with an open lineup, they have had several people leave and return sporadically. They are outspoken in their left wing politics, and their lyrics often speak out against the Mafia and fascism. They have released 14 albums and 5 EPs. This song, Al Dievel / La Marcia Del Diavolo is from their second album, 1996's La Grande Famiglia. The song in translation appears to be about an Italian "devil" commander who has a change of heart about spying for the Germans - and is either imprisoned or killed because of it.

If You Have No Shelter: Xutos e Pontapés with "Se Não Tens Abrigo"

Our random tune for today is by Portuguese rock band Xutos e Pontapés. Formed in 1978 in Almada, Portugal about four years after the Portuguese dictatorship ended, Xutos & Pontapés started off as a punk rock band and blazed a trail by singing rock in Portuguese. In 2009 they celebrated 30 years in the music business, and as Portugal's top rock band, with a huge three hour concert in Lisbon's Estádio do Restelo football stadium. Their name references different kinds of "kicks." Xutos (pronounced Chute-ohs) means to kick a ball or object, but in this context is slang for heroin injection. Pontapés means kicks on people. You can find this song, Se Não Tens Abrigo, in a live version on their 2002 album Sei Onde Tu Estás! (Ao Vivo 2001), on their 2009 album VIII, on their 2016 live acoustic album Se Me Amas (Acústico) [Ao Vivo], and on their 2018 live album Estádio do Restelo 2009. The song references the uncertainty of having nowhere to shelter oneself from life's storms.

Sounds Pretty Great: John Cruz and "Island Style"

Today's random song is performed by John Cruz, a singer-songwriter from Oahu, Hawaii. While he was born into a musical family (his mother loved Motown, his father played country, and his brother Ernie was a member of the musical group Ka'au Crater Boys), John didn't really develop his style until he lived on the East Coast while attending college, and acting in plays. He returned to Hawaii in 1995 to help his brother record an album, and in stage appearances he was invited to sing and play his own compositions which gained him a following even before he released an album. His first album was one of Hawaii's most successful. In his musical career, he was part of a compilation album that won the first ever Grammy Award for Hawaiian music, and this song, Island Style, has become known worldwide. He counts among his friends and fans Jack Johnson, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Jimmy Buffett, Lisa Loeb, and Trey Anastasio, and he is the subject of a 2006 documentary on his life. You can find Island Style on his 1996 album Acoustic Soul. The video shows him performing the song live with Jackson Browne and Jack Johnson.

The Last King: Hapa and "He'eia"

Hawaiian group Hapa plays today's random tune, called He'eia. Hapa means "half," and refers to the fact that one of the members, Barry Flanagan, is a white guy from New Jersey who is currently working with Hawaii natives Kapono Nāʻiliʻili, Tarvin Edwin Lono Makia, and Radasha Ho`ohuli. Flanagan has been a consistent 30 year member of the group. He started out partnering with Keli'i Ho'omalu Kaneali'i. Following Kaneali'i, Flanagan teamed with Nathan Aweau, who eventually left for a solo career. Flanagan then partnered with Hawaiian chanter Charles Ka'upu, who described Hapa's goal as helping revive the Polynesian language and to totally change the way the world perceives Hawaiian music. Unfortunately, Ka'upu died suddenly and unexpectedly in his early 50s in 2011. In its new incarnation Hapa continues to draw from jazz, folk, blues, bluegrass, Latin, flamenco, rock, Irish music and slam poetry as well as traditional Hawaiian music. Hapa's debut CD in 1995 became the biggest selling album ever by a Hawaiian group, and they have since released eight albums. He'eia can be found in a live version on Hapa's 2013 album Malihini. However, the studio recording was originally released in 1999 on their album Namahana. The song is a chant in honor of King Kalākaua, the last king of Hawaii, originally set to music in the 1930s.

An Affidavit: Cop & Thief with "Balkan Beat"

The random tune for today is a club tune should have strobes and colored lights flashing along with it. If you don't have that going in your living room when you play the song, just pretend that you are in a club with a lot of bodies grinding around you. Balkan Beat is by Cop & Thief, which is a DJ or a pair of DJs from Italy. But I'm not too sure because I can only find minimal information on them on the web. The tune is heavy on the beat like a club tune, with lots of Balkan brass thrown in. You can find Balkan Beat on The Balkan Club Night #2 (2011).

Gosh Who Are You: Barobax with Gamno and "Baro To Ki Hasti?"

Today's random tune is by Iranian pop band Barobax. From Tehran, Barobax' music is censored in Iran, but they have achieved a worldwide following through the internet and through Iranian satellite radio from outside Iran. Their name is taken from a pronunciation in Persian of the term for "friends" and is also a bit of a sarcastic take on the phrase as pronounced by certain residents of Tehran. They are joined on this song, Baba To Ki Hasti?, by Iranian hip hop and rap artist Gamno, also from Tehran. The title of the song I have seen translated as "Gosh Who Are You" and the lyrics of the song seem to address a beautiful woman. You can find Baba To Ki Hasti? on their 2016 album Barobax and Gamno and on the 2011 various artists compilation The Balkan Club Night, Vol. 2.

A Loner in Love: Sodsai Chaengkij and "The Boat That I Row"

Today's song is a throwback by the most popular singer in Bangkok in the 1960s. There isn't much information about Sodsai Chaengkij other than that she was originally from Bangkok and that she was one of the few Thai singers to perform American pop songs in English - most other Thai artists of the time translated them, more or less loosely, into Thai. She was probably seen by many American GIs on leave from the Vietnam War at the Lolita Night Club on Rajdamnoen Avenue. She apparently retired to the United States in the 2000's. This song, The Boat That I Row, is her cover of a 1958 song by Jesse Lee Turner, and can be found on the compilation CD Thai Beat A Go-Go, Vol. 2 (2003).

Fair Sean: Cathy Ryan with "Sheáin Bháin"

The randomizer gave us a double shot of Irish music over the last two days. Cathie Ryan, an Irish-American native of Detroit, Michigan, brings us today's random tune. Ryan was exposed early to Irish musicians such as Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers as well as American musicians such as Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and Hank Williams. In her childhood she idolized her father, a tenor, who taught her how to interpret and honor songs by knowing their histories and contexts. She was also exposed to the music of Appalachia from neighbors who had migrated to Michigan to work in the auto factories and gained an appreciation for the likes of Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, as well as the local music out of Motown. Moving to New York, she learned more about traditional Irish music from her then husband singer-songwriter Dermot Henry and mentor Joe Heaney. After graduating from CUNY with a degree in English Literature and Secondary Education, she began teaching at Lehmann College in the Bronx, but left the classroom behind as her singing career began to blossom. She still continues to teach workshops in traditional Irish singing and Irish mythology and folklore. She was a member of the all female Celtic group Cherish the Ladies. This song, Sheáin Bháin, can be found on her 1997 debut album Cathie Ryan. The song is a dialogue between two lovers named Sean and Mary.

Co Fa is by Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band. Frank is a native of Louisiana, and started his Soileau Zydeco Band in 1990. They have put out thirteen studio albums and one live album. Co Fa first appeared on Keith Frank & The Soileau Zydeco Band's Live at Slim's Y-Ki-Ki album (1999) and can be found on Putumayo World Music's 2000 compilation CD Zydeco.

Let's Go Get 'Em: Cha Wa and "All On a Mardis Gras Day"

We are getting close to Mardi Gras in a few days, and the randomizer comes up with a winner in the form of today's song, called All On a Mardi Gras Day. The song is performed by Cha Wa, a band that melds New Orleans brass band sounds with the Mardi Gras Indian musical tradition and explores contemporary interpretations of traditional Mardi Gras Indian songs through the vocals of Big Chief Monk Boudreaux of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indian tribe. Founded by drummer Joe Gelini, the band also features J'wan Boudreaux, grandson of Monk Boudreaux and himself the spyboy for the tribe. The name of the group, Cha Wa, means "we're coming for you" in the Mardi Gras Indian vernacular. You can find All On a Mardi Gras Day on Cha Wa's debut album Funk 'n' Feathers (2016).
