Lost My Heart: Celtic Crossroads and "Galway Girl"

Our random tune for today is a Steve Earle song covered by Celtic Crossroads. Celtic Crossroads began as a street show quartet in Galway playing traditional Irish music with a modern flair. As their following got bigger, they decided to make their show more formal. Over 400 musicians showed up at the audition, of which they hired nine. Still a street show, the crowds grew so large that the band was asked by city officials to move to a theater, at which they played to sold out crowds six nights a week. The group now travels the globe bringing their style of Irish music to the world. This song, Galway Girl, can be found on their 2010 album World Fusion, and the video is from a PBS special devoted to the group and its music.

It Won't Throw You: Altan and "An Grianan/Horse with a Heart"

Altan performs our random tune for today, called An Grianan/Horse with a Heart. Originally formed in County Donegal by vocalist and fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her husband Frankie Kennedy in 1987, the pair initially released a pair of albums as a duo, and additional members were added through the years. They named their group Altan after a lake in County Donegal. County Donegal has a rich tradition of Irish music and styles, and Altan made this music available to the world and in the process became Irish music legends matching The Chieftains in popularity. Kennedy died of Ewings sarcoma in 1994, leaving Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh to keep the band going. Altan has recorded and toured with fellow countrymen The Chieftains, and other musicians such as such as Enya, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt and Alison Krauss. An Grianan/Horse with a Heart can be found on their 1989 debut album Horse with a Heart, and on the various artists compilation album Celtic Putumayo Presents: Celtic Tides (1998).

The Disappeared: Inti-Illimani and "Vino del Mar"

Our random tune for today is by Inti-Illimani, and is called Vino del Mar. Formed in 1967 by university students, Inti-Illimani gained popularity in Chile due to their song Venceremos (We Shall Overcome) which became the anthem of the populist movement. This led to their exile - Allende's government was overthrown while they were on tour in Europe and, fearing for their safety, they stayed in exile in Italy until 1988, leading them to joke that their exile was the longest tour for any band ever. While in exile, they began to combine their Latin musical heritage with elements of European baroque and popular music, and by doing so helped create some of the first "world" music. Their music was banned in Chile, though distributed underground, and in 1988 they were allowed to return to their country. They participated actively in the campaign that ousted Pinochet from power in a democratic election, and continue their political activism to this day. However, in 2001 the band split over musical and political differences, and there are now two bands. The first retained the name of Inti-Illimani, and the second became Inti-Histórico. Vino del Mar is on Inti-Illimani's 2002 album Lugares Comunes. The song is an homage to Marta Ugarte Román, a Chilean teacher and member of the Chilean Communist Party who served in the Salvador Allende government and who was kidnapped, tortured, raped, murdered and whose body was dropped into the ocean from a helicopter by agents of the Augusto Pinochet regime along with hundreds others. Her body washed ashore two weeks after because the anchor to make her body sink came off.

Thieves and Robbers: Clannad and "Strange Land"

From the soundtrack to a British TV series called Robin of Sherwood comes today's random song. The music to this series was provided by Clannad, an Irish band whose music draws from Celtic, traditional Irish, new age, folk and folk rock. Storyteller and Stud: Sotiw and "Kokopelli Shuffle"

Our random tune for today is by Sotiw, pronounced So-too. Made up of Native American flautist Michael Joseph Ulery and guitarist Derek Mortland, Sotiw combines New Age, eclectic, world and fusion jazz styles to create a musical world with no boundaries. The two musicians were initially drawn together by their heavy metal past, but found an instinctual kindred in writing music. In addition, Mortland had to relearn guitar after suffering a paralyzing injury in a motorcycle accident, and in the process of relearning he also redefined his musical perspective by breaking through new barriers. This song, Kokopelli Shuffle, highlights both of their abilities and this new direction, between the traditional flute rhythmically matching the guitar's dissonance. The song is named after the Southwestern Native American trickster and fertility god. You can find Kokopelli Shuffle on Sotiw's 2007 album Sketches in Time.

The Devil Made Her Do It: Christine Salem featuring Moriarty with "Sakalav"

Christine Salem, from the island of Réunion, performs our random tune for today. Réunion is a French terroritory in the Indian Ocean about 120 miles southeast of Mauritius. Salem's music centers around "maloya," the traditional music made up of work songs and chants of the former African slaves of the island. These songs are percussion driven and of the call and response type and are often used to induce a trance where one communes with their ancestors in a musical gathering called "servis kabaré". The music was illegal on the island until 1981, as it was considered by the Catholic Church to be "devil's music" and by the authorities as a political threat. In fact, a woman singing this type of music upset some of the older generation, because it was also generally seen as "men's music." Salem came upon the music while attending a servis kabaré, and she became hooked. She has received international acclaim for her music, and has performed at WOMAD. This song, Sakalav, can be found on her 2013 CD Salem Tradition. She is accompanied on the song by Moriarty, a French/American musical collective made up of performers born in France to American parents. The band is named after Dean Moriarty, a character in Jack Kerouac's On the Road.
