He has continued to compose, perform on stage, has put out at least one album and has had his works included in many compilations, including the one from which this song was taken, Istanbul Calling, Vol. 2 (2007).

Something To Hold in the Forest at Night: Kirsty MacColl and "Us Amazonians"

Kirsty MacColl, an English singer-songwriter who recorded many pop hits in the 1990s, and made notable appearances on other hits, is the performer of our random tune. Married to producer Steve Lillywhite, MacColl sang backup vocals on the recordings of many of the artists that he produced. She died in 2000 in a tragic accident in Cozumel, Mexico. While diving in an area restricted for swimming only, she was hit by a speedboat that had strayed into the area - she died saving her son who was in the boat's path. She is highly esteemed by musicians and friends who have survived her. Billy Bragg always includes extra verses she wrote in covering his song A New England, a memorial bench has been placed in her honor at the southern entrance to Soho Square in London, and she is always heard during the holidays on her guest vocal in The Pogues' Fairytale of New York, which has been voted as the fan favorite Christmas song on the VH1 video channel. This song, Us Amazonians, can be found on her 2000 album Tropical Brainstorm.

He began his career playing in an annual gypsy pilgrimage in Carmargue, France but only agreed to play for a wider public ten years after the death of preeminent gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Purified: Golem and "Mikveh Bath"

Our song today, called Mikveh Bath, references the traditional Jewish bath taken by women to purify themselves after menstruation and before marriage. The song is presented by rock-klezmer band Golem, which was created in 2000 in New York City by Annette Ezekiel Kogan, who serves as bandleader, vocalist and accordionist. The band describes their music as Eastern European Jewish folk-rock, and combines elements of rock, punk, and klezmer with lyrics in mainly English, Yiddish and Russian. The name of the band refers to the monster created out of clay to protect the Jewish people, and turned back to clay when it got out of control. The band calls themselves a collective monster that approaches traditional music with respect, but without timidity and resistance to change. Mikveh Bath can be found on Golem's 2014 CD Tanz.

Today's random tune is by Amr Diab, who is an Egyptian singer and composer of pop music. A winner of the multiple music awards, he is known as the "Father of the Mediterranean Sound," referring to his blend of Egyptian sounds and textures with Western rhythms and instrumentation. He is also a pioneer in video, being the first Egyptian artist to appear in music videos and helping to popularize them in the Arab world. Diab has also appeared in film. He was criticized during the Arab Spring uprisings in Egypt for maintaining his silence and moving to London during the tumult, but after Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak was deposed he recorded a song called Masr A'let (Egypt Has Spoken) and released it in conjunction with a video showing many of those who had died, and established a charity to help rebuild Egyptian society. He has released 30 official albums. This song, Amarain, can be found on his 1999 album of the same name, and on the Putumayo Presents:Arabic Groove CD (2001). Hendrix of the Kora: Prince Diabaté and "Horoya"

Our random song for today is called Horoya and is sung by Prince Diabaté, a griot from Guinea in West Africa. His father was a kora player who broke tradition and also taught Diabaté's mother to play, and Prince Diabaté gained proficiency by accompanying his parents to their concerts. At age 16, he braved outraged soldiers and his own fear to throw himself with his kora at the feet of Guinea's president to play a special song for him - the touched president personally sponsored his musical education. Diabaté takes as inspiration traditional Mandingo and Malinké music, but he also borrows from reggae, rap, blues and funk. He has been called the "Jimi Hendrix of the kora," and he is responsible for creating the sound he calls Mandingo reggae. Horoya can be found on his 2006 album Djerelon.

Emotional Devotional: Susheela Raman (with Cheb Mami) and "Nagumomo"

Acclaimed British/Indian musician Susheela Raman brings us the random tune for today, called Nagumomo. Raman's parents are Tamil from southern India who emigrated to London in the mid-60s, where Raman was born, then moved to Australia. Steeped in South Indian classical music because her parents were committed to keeping Tamil culture alive, Raman gave recitals and eventually started her own band concentrating on funk and rock & roll. She later moved into music based more on blues and jazz, then traveled to India to rediscover her music roots and explore Carnatic music. Returning to London, she began working with partner Sam Mills on ways to bridge Indian music with a wider Western audience. She released her first album in 2001, and has recorded five more since then. Nagumomo can be found on her debut album, Salt Rain, released in 2001. You can also find it on the various artists compilation CD Putumayo Presents: India (2009). The original song was written by South Indian mystic and poet-composer Thyagaraja and is a devotional to the Hindu deity Rama. Raman reinterprets the song in a jazz style. Tapped Out: Cara Dillon and "The Parting Glass"

Cara Dillon sings today's random song, called The Parting Glass. An Irish folk singer, Cara Dillon was part of the supergroup Equation and has collaborated with her husband, musician and songwriter Sam Lakeman, as Polar Star. From Dungiven in Northern Ireland, an area steeped in traditional Irish music, she learned local folk songs in school from teachers and at traditional music workshops. Primarily a singer, she can also play fiddle and whistle, but it is her voice that has made her famous and at 14 she won the All Ireland Singing Trophy. She formed her first band, Óige, in 1991 where she put her vision of Irish, Scottish and other traditional music out into the public. In 1995, she left to replace Kate Rusby in Equation and the band recorded one album of which one single was released before the record was shelved. She and Sam Lakeman left Equation because of creative differences with the other band members and formed Polar Star; unfortunately, none of their recordings was ever released. However, she did perform on Mike Oldfield's 1998 album Tubular Bells III. From 2001 to the present, often with help and support of Lakeman, she has released solo albums and her voice has often been compared to that of Kate Bush. You can find The Parting Glass on her 2009 album Hill of Thieves. The song is often sung at the end of a gathering of friends, and can be a powerful song at funerals to honor those who have departed.

Gift of Gab: Tinariwen and "Tamiditin"

Today's random song is by the band Tinariwen. The band's name means "deserts" and indeed they are from the Saraha desert region of northern Mali. They were formed in 1979 in Algeria by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, who witnessed his father's execution at age four, and have been called by Slate "rock and roll rebels whose rebellion, for once, wasn't just metaphorical." Alhabib built his own guitar as a child out of a tin can, a stick and bicycle wire and started to play old Tuareg and modern Arabic tunes. In the late 70s, he started exploring chaabi music, Algerian raï and western pop and rock. In the 1980, Ghadafi wanted to build an elite force of Tuareg fighters and issued a decree for all Tuareg living illegally in Libya to join the Libyan army. In military training camps in Libya, Alhabib met other Tuareg musicians, and the result was a collective they began calling Kel Tinariwen (People of the Desert) later shortened to the band's current name. They moved to Alhabib's home country of Mali in 1989, and a Tuareg uprising against the government led to a peace agreement in which the members of the band were able to leave fighting and devote themselves full time to their music. They began to receive international recognition in the late 1990s, and performed in the touring Festival au Désert as headliners and performed at WOMAD in 2001. After that, they toured regularly, and in 2010 represented Algeria at the South African World Cup. An Arabic uprising in Mali in 2012 and a denunciation of "Satan's music" led to the brief abduction of one of Tinariwen's members. Many fled to the Southwestern US to evade capture and record a new album. Their music is "assouf," traditional Tuareg melodies and rhythms with traditional Tuareg instruments, Berber music, Algerian rai, traditional Malian music, regional pop music, and Western rock. You can hear the desert in their driving electric guitars and chanting style. You can also hear the electric blues, though the band is adamant that they never heard the blues until they began touring the US. This song, Tamiditin, can be found on their 2015 release Live in Paris. The lyrics are of a man lamenting how his girlfriend moves from camp to camp talking to everyone.

And...Action: Kasai Allstars and "Tshalemba"

The Kasai Allstars bring us the random tune for the day, a joyous song called Tshalemba which was composed for the soundtrack to a movie called Félicité. A 25 piece orchestral group based in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the members come from five different bands and represent five different ethnic groups. It was long thought that collaboration of members of these disparate ethnic groups, given some longstanding tribal conflicts, was impossible. But these musicians decided to form a "superband" at the encouragement of Belgian producer Vincent Kenis in order to pool their resources. They play a style of music known as Congotronics, which consists of traditional instrumentation and electric sounds, and often has a particular buzzing sound from a fuzzbox. You can find Tshalemba on their newest album, Around Félicité (2017).

Shazam: 8½ Souvenirs and "Kazango"

8½ Souvenirs, an Austin band of the 1990s that disbanded about 2000, brings us the random tune for today. The band's name came from the Fellini movie and the Django Reinhardt song Souvenirs. This song, Kazango, is from 8½ Souvenirs' 1995 album Happy Feet.
