Wanna Be Startin' Something: Hugh Masekela and "Rock With You"

The late South African jazz trumpeter, cornetist, flugelhornist, composer and singer Hugh Masekela brings us today's random tune. Hugh Masekela began singing and playing piano as a child, but took up the trumpet after seeing Kirk Douglas play a trumpeter modeled on Bix Beiderbecke in the movie Young Man with a Horn. His music has always reflected his life experience during South Africa's apartheid era, and through his music he reached a large portion of the population living through the oppression. He helped form and played with the groundbreaking group The Jazz Epistles, the first African jazz group to record an LP. He is known in the United States for his interpretation of the 5th Dimension's Up, Up and Away (1967) and his hit Grazing in the Grass (1968). He was once married to singer Miriam Makeba, and he toured with Paul Simon in support of his Graceland album. He has also worked with African artists of all stripes, and he is involved in a number of South African social initiatives. This song, Rock With You, is a cover of the Michael Jackson song and can be found on his 1992 album Beatin' Aroun de Bush.

The Solution to All Problems: Hans Zimmer and "Of Death and Dying"

Of Death and Dying, our random song for the day, comes from the soundtrack of a movie about South Africa. The Power of One, adapted from a novel by Bryce Courtenay, is the story of a young English boy in South Africa and his complicated relationships under apartheid with others in the country, both black and white. German composer and music producer Hans Zimmer composed much of the music for the movie in collaboration with Lebo M., a South African vocalist and composer who arranged and performed music for The Lion King movies and stage productions. Of Death and Dying can be found on The Power of One soundtrack, released in 1992.

Asian Massiveness: Karsh Kale and "One Step Beyond"

Our random tune for today is by Karsh Kale, an Indian-American musician considered one of the early developers of the Asian Underground genre of music. Karsh Kale mixes music such as Indian classical with electronica, rock, pop and ambient music. He was born Uttkarsha Kale in West Bromwich, England and moved to Brooklyn when he was three. He took an early interest in tabla and music in general, spurred by his father who introduced him to traditional Indian classical music, rock and early hip hop. Kale taught himself the tabla, developing his "electric tabla" style. In 2000, he was invited by Bill Laswell to join Tabla Beat Science along with Zakir Hussain, Talvin Singh, Trilok Gurtu and Sultan Khan, and their album Tala Matrix is considered one of the most influential Asian fusion albums to date. About this time, Kale became the first Indian-American to be signed to a solo recording contract in the US, and released his first solo album Realize, with it's "Asian Massive" sound in 2001. He has written music for Bollywood and crossover films, television series such as HBO's True Blood, and with artists such as Sting and Norah Jones. This song, One Step Beyond, appears on Kale's 2001 debut album Realize.

No Hay Nada que Yo Pueda Hacer: Hermanos Calatrava and "Space Oddity"

We have a literal oddity for our random tune of the day - in the form of a cover of David Bowie's Space Oddity by the Spanish brothers, comedians, parodists and singers Manuel García Lozano (Manolo) and Francisco García Lozano (Paco) who go by the name of Hermanos Calatrava. They got their start in 1952 on the SER channel of Radio Extremadura, and then performed in a club from 1955 through 1980. They also were part of a program on Radio Barcelona, and originally were a serious musical duo. However, during one performance Paco lost his voice, leading to audience laughter and a new direction in the brothers' careers. Paco was well known for Mick Jagger impersonations as he had a slight resemblance to the singer. He was also known as the ugly one, while Manolo was considered to be the serious singer and was also called the handsome one or the least ugly one. You can find Space Oddity on the various artists compilation Spanish Bizarro: Recopilación Psicotrónica para Mentes Infames (2001) and on the 2015 reissue Hermanos Calatrava: Canciones Infantiles para Adultos.

Queen of the Boob Tube: Caetano Veloso and "Santa Clara, Padroeira da Televisao"

Brazilian legend Caetano Veloso brings us today's random tune, called Santa Clara, Padroeira da Televisao. Born as one of seven children in 1942 in Brazil's state of Bahia in 1942, he won a musical contest after moving to Salvador for college. He soon became one of the leading voices, along with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and the group Os Mutantes, of Tropicalismo. Tropicalismo was a larger movement encompassing poetry, theater and music and bringing together the popular and avante garde. However, Tropicalismo is more well known today for its music, which fused Brazilian and African rhythms with rock and roll. A very divisive movement, Tropicalismo was derided and protested by leftist Brazilian university students because of its influences from outside of Brazil, particularly the United States. Veloso performed in a series of concerts in 1968 at the International Song Festival in Rio de Janeiro, which ended with him lecturing student protesters and walking off the stage. His music was not only attacked from the left, but also the rightist Brazilian dictatorship, and he and Gilberto Gil were jailed and then ordered to leave the country. They spent two years in exile in London in the early 1970s where they worked on their music, and Veloso's music was often censored and banned continuously until the dictatorship exited power in 1985. However, his music became and remains popular outside of Brazil, and the New York Times called him one of the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century. He has also been compared with Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and the Lennon/McCartney partnership. Caetano Veloso has released 34 studio albums and 17 live albums. Santa Clara, Padroeira da Televisao can be found on his 1992 album Circulado.

Our random tune for today, called Olinda Road, is played by the Hawaiian group Hapa. Hapa means "half," and refers to the fact that one of the members, Barry Flanagan, is a white guy from New Jersey who is currently working with Hawaii natives Kapono Nāʻiliʻili, Tarvin Edwin Lono Makia, and Radasha Ho`ohuli. Following Kaneali'i, Flanagan teamed with Nathan Aweau, who eventually left for a solo career. Flanagan then partnered with Hawaiian chanter Charles Ka'upu, who described Hapa's goal as helping revive the Polynesian language and to totally change the way the world perceives Hawaiian music. Unfortunately, Ka'upu died suddenly and unexpectedly in his early 50s in 2011. In its new incarnation Hapa continues to draw from jazz, folk, blues, bluegrass, Latin, flamenco, rock, Irish music and slam poetry as well as traditional Hawaiian music. Hapa's debut CD in 1995 became the biggest selling album ever by a Hawaiian group, and they have since released eight albums. Olinda Road can be found on Hapa's 1992 album Hapa.

Cajun Cowboy: BeauSoleil and "La Valse du Vacher"

BeauSoleil brings us our random tune for today, called La Valse du Vacher (Cowboy Waltz). BeauSoleil was founded in 1975, released its first album in 1977 and became one of the most well-known groups playing traditional and original music in the Creole tradition of Louisiana. They have also gone beyond the traditional, incorporating rock and roll, jazz, blues, calypso and other genres. They are an extensive touring band, and they sing in both English and Colonial Louisiana French. The band takes its name from Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil, who led the Acadian resistance to British deportation from Canada and led 193 exiles to safety in Louisiana. The band almost didn't come to be - Michael Doucet, one of the founders, was going to New Mexico to study Romantic Poets, but he won a Folk Arts Apprenticeship sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. As he puts it: "I traded William Blake for Dewey Balfa," and he sought out every living Cajun/Creole performer to learn what he could about Cajun music and their techniques. He even encouraged some to resume performing. BeauSoleil are one of the few Creole/Cajun groups to win a Grammy. La Valse du Vacher can be found on their 1997 album The Best of Beausoleil and on their 1999 album Vintage Beausoleil.

Has Two Women, But Loves the Third: Dervish and "Máire Mhór"

Today's random song is called Máire Mhór and is by Dervish, a traditional Irish band from County Sligo described by the BBC as an icon of Irish music. Formed in 1989, they represented Ireland in 2007 in the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest. They have also been known to stand for their principles. In 2012 they canceled tour dates in Israel and announced a cultural boycott of the country, which in turn led to a negative backlash at home. Máire Mhór is from their 1995 album Playing with Fire. It was also recorded on their 1997 album Live in Palma and on the 2010 album Live at Johnny Fox's.

On a Platter: Celtic Crossroads and "King's Head Set"

Celtic Crossroads brings us today's random tune entitled King's Head Set. Celtic Crossroads began as a streetshow quartet in Galway playing traditional Irish music with a modern flair. As their following got bigger, they decided to make their show more formal. Over 400 musicians showed up at the audition, of which they hired nine. Still a street show, the crowds grew so large that the band was asked by city officials to move to a theater, at which they played to sold out crowds six nights a week. The group now travels the globe bringing their style of Irish music to the world. This version of King's Head Set can be found on their 2010 album World Fusion, and the video is from a PBS special devoted to the group and its music.

History Coming to Life Again: Capercaillie and "Waiting for the Wheel to Turn"

Our random song for today is rooted in some of the darkness of Scotland's history, and the hope for redemption. The song is performed by Capercaillie, a Scottish band founded in the Argyll region of Scotland in the early 1980s. Known for mixing traditional Gaelic tunes with modern recording techniques and instrumentation, Capercaillie started as a purely traditional band. In the 1990s, they began mix funk bass lines, synthesizers and electric guitars into their repertoire of traditional tunes, but lately they have been reverting back to more traditional instrumentation while retaining a light fusion feel to their music. In 1992, they recorded the first Scottish-Gaelic song to crack the UK Top 40. They have released eleven studio albums, four of which have made the UK Albums chart, and one live album. They also have two compilation albums and have performed on two soundtracks. This song, Waiting for the Wheel to Turn, can be found on their 1991 CD Delirium, on the remix album Get Out (1992), and on the 1998 compilation album Dusk Til Dawn. This version above is their original 1991 version and video - they also have a longer remix version, seen below.

Spitting Out Spiritual Power: MC Yogi and "Chakra Beatbox"

Today's random tune is by MC Yogi, a Bay Area hip hop artist and yogi who promotes themes of Hindu religion and philosophy in his music. MC Yogi is the performing name of Nicolas Giacomini who began rapping at 13. While living in home for at-risk children at age 17, he became a practitioner of yoga after his father took it up. His songs are often bhajans, or devotional songs, celebrating one or another of the Hindu deities. At other times, he provides interesting history lessons on the lives of important historical figures within Hinduism, such as Gandhi. Even when he is doing nothing but beatboxing, his songs can sound like mantras or prayers. This song, Chakra Beatbox, can be found on MC Yogi's 2008 album Elephant Power.
