Emotional: Fidel Nadal and "Emocionado"

Today's random tune is a reggae song by Fidel Nadal. An Afro-Argentinian reggae musician and songwriter, Nadal is credited as a pioneer of Latin American reggae as well as underground punk/hardcore in Argentina. Born into an academic and artistic family that was also on the front lines of social justice for black Argentines, Nadal was influenced early by blues and jazz. He became very inspired in both his music and ideology by Rastafarianism and Bob Marley. His first band, Todos Tus Muertos, mixed reggae, punk and hip hop and became very successful in Argentina in the late 1980s and through the 1990s. During the 1990s he also formed the reggae band Lumumba. He went solo in 2001, and decided to focus purely on reggae with a rastafarian image and style. He has had several hits, received several Latin Grammy's and in 2009 his hit International Love was featured on the FIFA Trax section of EA Sports FIFA 10 sports video game. He continues to record and tour solo as well with reconstituted bands Todos Tus Muertos and Lumumba. This song, Emocionado, is from his 2007 album of the same name.

Today's random song is by George "Fiji" Veikoso. Originally from Fiji but raised in Hawaii, and known by his performing name of "Fiji," Veikoso is a reggae, hip-hop, R&B and jazz vocalist. Encouraged by relatives to pursue his musical dreams, he joined the Fijian band Rootstrata in 1987 but fled to Hawaii during the 1987 Fijian coups d'etat. He has won numerous awards, and may be more recognizable as the voice who sang the theme song, Let Me Be the One, with Glenn Medeiros for the hit TV show Baywatch, and as an actor in the 2002 surfer film Blue Crush. You can find this song, Anything You Want, on his 1999 album Grattitude, and on the 2003 album The Best of Fiji.

Watchamacallit: Darryl Labrado and "Da Kine"

This song with a reggae groove is performed by Darryl Labrado, a Hawaiian musician who became a teen star. I couldn't find a ton of information on Labrado at present, but an article about Labrado's early years details a hard life marred by a family with poverty, substance abuse, and physical abuse. Things were so bad that growing up Labrado didn't live in a house with running water, but had to use a waterfall nearby, and the roof leaked so much that Labrado and his brother kept having to move their bed to keep it from getting wet. However, he was discovered at age 10, put out his first single at age 11, released his first video at 14 (which promptly won best music video at the Hawaiian Music Awards and aired on Hawaiian Airlines for four years) and that same year released his first album and this hit single, Da Kine. You can find Da Kine on Labrado's 1999 album Shaka the Moon, and on the 2000 various artists compilation Island Roots. The title of the song refers to a very versatile term in Hawaiian Pidgin English.

Mama Work Hard is by Daddy Roy the Messenger, a Jamaican band led by Daddy Roy who grew up listening to and taking inspiration from pioneering reggae artists such as Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and others. Playing what they call "conscious reggae" with original lyrics, Daddy Roy the Messenger intend to promote positivity, strength and unity through their music. They have toured throughout the United States and Canada and have released five albums.
