Having a Ball: Djavan and "Embola Bola (Catereté)"



Djavan, a Brazilian singer-songwriter, brings us the random tune for today, called Embola Bola (Catereté). He was born to a poor family and started his music career with a self-formed band that played Beatles songs. That began to change when in 1973, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and began singing in nightclubs and competing in festivals. He recorded his first album in 1975, which featured one of his most memorable hits called Flor de Lis Combining traditional Brazilian music and rhythms with other styles from around the Americas, Europe and Africa, Djavan's songs have been recorded by many other artists including Brazilian stars Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso and American artists Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer and Lee Ritenour. He has released 27 albums to date You can find Embola Bola (Catereté) on his debut album called A Voz E O Violão (1975) and on the 2009 compilation CD Putumayo Presents: Brazilian Café (2009).
