A blog about world and global music from a guy who co-hosts the KUNM Global Music Show, 89.9 FM Albuquerque/Santa Fe, http://www.kunm.org. I post one song a day, with reflections on the music, life, and whatever else comes into my mind.

Here's the Heart: Söndörgö and "Evo Srcu"
Today's random tune is performed by the group Söndörgö from Hungary. Concentrating on South Slav music to preserve the musical traditions of Serbs and Croats along Hungary's southern border, they perform as a traditional tambura band supplemented with accordion, flute and percussion and have been making waves in the global music scene with their renditions of music that inspired classical composers such as Bartok. Founded in 1995, they are different from usual Slavic oriented bands in that they don't use brass. They have played many major festivals (including Albuquerque's own Globalquerque) and have released five albums to date. This song, Evo Srcu, is from their 2014 album Tamburocket: Hungarian Fireworks, and refers to a Chinese pipe used in the song.
Listen to songs like this and more on the KUNM Global Music Show every Monday night from 10 pm - 1 am Mountain Standard Time. Live streaming, program information and the two-week digital archive can be found at http://www.kunm.org.

Avoid the Pit: Dokkerman and the Turkeying Fellaz with "Mango Season"
How many times have we heard you clamoring for some Hungarian afro-funk for your random tune? Pray no more! Nine piece outfit Dokkerman and the Turkeying Fellaz recycle gritty grooves from the 60s and 70s of the type that only DJs now spin, and in doing so serve as Hungary's only representative in the deep funk revival. You can find this song, Mango Season, on their 2015 CD Illegal Move.

Globalquerque 2014 Video 6: Söndörgö (Hungary)
This video is of Hungarian Serb band Söndörgö (my best attempt at phonetics - SHURN-dur-gur) performing on the Plaza Mayor stage at the National Hispanic Cultural Center during Globalquerque 2014 on September 20th in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Focusing on the tambura, a stringed instrument of the Balkans, Söndörgö seeks to revive the once popular instrument through rapid-fire playing of traditional dance music and instrumentals.
This video was shot on my Samsung Galaxy, and the sound is good! Enjoy!
