Me Too: Hakan Türkürer & Ali Sural with "Dem"

Hakan Türküer & Ali Sural - Dem by sercansungur

Our random song for today is performed by Hakan Türkürer & Ali Sural and is entitled Dem. I couldn't find much information on Türkürer, who I assume is the trumpeter, but Ali Sural is a well known Turkish musician, DJ and prodcer from Istanbul who began his professional career at 17. He has continued to compose, perform on stage, has put out at least one album and has had his works included in many compilations, including the one from which this song was taken, Istanbul Calling, Vol. 2 (2007).

Opening the Vain: Bob Marley and Wailers with "Waiting in Vain"

Today's random tune is by the legendary Bob Marley and the Wailers, a reggae and ska band that was formed by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in 1963. Many of the band's early songs were recorded with the aid of Lee "Scratch" Perry and his studio band The Upsetters. Bob Marley and the Wailers were known for recording some of the most notable reggae songs in history. Tosh and Wailer left the band in 1974, leading to a revamped Wailers lineup, and Marley died in 1981 of malignant melanoma. This song, Waiting In Vain, is from the 1977 groundbreaking album Exodus, which redefined reggae music and was named by Time Magazine in 1999 as one of the three best albums of the 20th century.

Something To Hold in the Forest at Night: Kirsty MacColl and "Us Amazonians"

Kirsty MacColl, an English singer-songwriter who recorded many pop hits in the 1990s, and made notable appearances on other hits, is the performer of our random tune. Married to producer Steve Lillywhite, MacColl sang backup vocals on the recordings of many of the artists that he produced. She died in 2000 in a tragic accident in Cozumel, Mexico. While diving in an area restricted for swimming only, she was hit by a speedboat that had strayed into the area - she died saving her son who was in the boat's path. She is highly esteemed by musicians and friends who have survived her. Billy Bragg always includes extra verses she wrote in covering his song A New England, a memorial bench has been placed in her honor at the southern entrance to Soho Square in London, and she is always heard during the holidays on her guest vocal in The Pogues' Fairytale of New York, which has been voted as the fan favorite Christmas song on the VH1 video channel. This song, Us Amazonians, can be found on her 2000 album Tropical Brainstorm.

Heart-Flower: Manitas de Plata and "Toringa"

Flamenco is on tap today as our random tune from Manitas de Plata, a French flamenco guitarist who flouted flamenco rhythmic conventions and achieved worldwide fame. He was born Ricardo Baliardo in 1921 in a gypsy caravan in southern France. He began his career playing in an annual gypsy pilgrimage in Carmargue, France but only agreed to play for a wider public ten years after the death of preeminent gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Pablo Picasso, on hearing him, exclaimed that Manitas de Plata was "of greater worth than I am!" He became known in the US in the 1960s, and he was father of many members of the renowned Gipsy Kings. He died in November, 2014. This song, Toringa, can be found on the 2014 album Flores de Mi Corazón.

Purified: Golem and "Mikveh Bath"

Our song today, called Mikveh Bath, references the traditional Jewish bath taken by women to purify themselves after menstruation and before marriage. The song is presented by rock-klezmer band Golem, which was created in 2000 in New York City by Annette Ezekiel Kogan, who serves as bandleader, vocalist and accordionist. The band describes their music as Eastern European Jewish folk-rock, and combines elements of rock, punk, and klezmer with lyrics in mainly English, Yiddish and Russian. The name of the band refers to the monster created out of clay to protect the Jewish people, and turned back to clay when it got out of control. The band calls themselves a collective monster that approaches traditional music with respect, but without timidity and resistance to change. Mikveh Bath can be found on Golem's 2014 CD Tanz.
