Trickster or Poet: Sergio Vesely and "Kosmisches Karussell (Dr. Owlglass)"

Our random tune for today is by Sergio Vesely, and is called Kosmisches Karussell (Dr. Owlglass). Sergio Vesely is a Chilean guitarist and musician who first learned music by playing Tyrolean folk songs on accordion. In 1976, he was exiled from Chile after being arrested for political activity and took up residence, and later citizenship, in Germany. He has released over a dozen albums. Kosmisches Karussel (Dr. Owlglass) either refers to an actual historical writer named Hans Erich Blaich who used the name for his political poetry, or it refers to the German comic-trickster character Til Eulenspiegel, whose name translates to Owl-Glass or Owl-Mirror and whose scatological practical jokes amused Germans from the 1500s onward. The song can be found on Sergio Vesely's 1997 album Schwabenserenade eines Hinterweltlers (Vertonung Schwäbischer Lyriker durch einen Chilenen - Extraordinär!)

Listen to songs like this and more on the KUNM Global Music Show every Monday night from 10 pm - 1 am Mountain Standard Time. Live streaming, program information and the two-week digital archive can be found at http://www.kunm.org.
