Destruction: Habib Koité and Bamada with "Woulaba"

Habib Koité, a Senegalese singer, guitarist and songwriter based in Mali, brings us today's random tune. Koité's band, Bamada, is a West African supergroup made up of many well-known African musicians. Koité tunes his guitar to a pentatonic scale and plays it on open strings, much like the one would play the African ngoni. His music can be reminiscent of both blues and flamenco, two styles he has picked up in his musical career. He also has an intimate and relaxed vocal style that makes his music sound calm and even moody. Born to musician parents, he learned how to play by watching and listening. After graduation from the Bamako Institute of the Arts, he formed Bamada in 1988. He began touring outside of Africa in 1994, and his music got a huge boost when three of his songs were included with the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. He has released eight albums - his latest came out in 2014. This song, Woulaba, is from his 2001 CD Baro, and is about the destruction of the African countryside by humans.

Their main focus was playing for the Gypsy Caravan Dance Company, and they played a variety of original music and tribal fusion for the company's productions. They also played in large musical productions and in smaller, more intimate venues. They played WOMAD in Seattle in 2001 as well as hundreds of other festivals and gatherings. Gypsy Rain is from their 2008 album Migration. Peace to You: Bombino and "Assalam Felawan"

Singer-songwriter Bombino, the acclaimed guitarist from Niger, brings us our random tune. He sings in the Tuareg Tamashek language and addresses political concerns of the Tuareg in his songs. Bombino taught himself to play guitar as a child in a refugee encampment in Algeria after his family had to flee Niger due to a Tuareg rebellion in 1990. While spending his teen years in exile in Algeria and Libya, he watched videos of Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler and other guitarists to learn their styles. In 1997 he returned to Niger and began his life as professional musician, but had to flee again in 2007 after another Tuareg rebellion erupted. The government banned guitars to the Tuareg, fearing them as a political weapon but Bombino declared that his guitar was not a gun, but a hammer with which to build a house of the Tuareg people. While Bombino was in exile in Burkina Faso, filmmaker Ron Wyman heard cassettes of his playing and found him, and produced Bombino's chart-topping world album Agadez. Bombino returned to Niger again in 2010, and he is the subject of the film Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion. This song, Assalam Felawan (Peace to You), is from Bombino's 2011 album Agadez. The song is a thanks to the Tuareg people for nurturing their children in a time of crisis, as well as a plea for peace.

Giving Them the Bird: Juliana & PAVA with "A Winter Solstice Song I"

Today's very short random song is by Juliana & PAVA, and is called A Winter Solstice Song I (I know, a little out of season but that's what randomness gets you). A vocal ensemble that focuses on Russian traditional and ancient folk songs, Juliana & PAVA was founded in Denmark in 2000 by Juliana Svetlitchnaia. The group moved to the United States in 2005, where they settled in Seattle and formed a revamped ensemble. They have received many awards and accolades, and their music brings one back to a village in traditional Russia and its celebrations such as holidays, weddings and funerals, as well as cyclical rituals of the year like harvest or midsummer. The name PAVA means peacock, a symbolic animal for Russia, and in that spirit the singers wear colorful traditional costumes, some as old as 200 years. Kenyalectronic: The Owiny Sigoma Band and "Owour Won Gembe"

A collaboration between Kenyan musicians and an electronica band produced today's random tune, called Owour Won Gembe. The Owiny Sigoma Band was formed when British electronica, hip hop and soul band Elmore Judd traveled to Nairobi in 2009 in the euphoria after Barack Obama's election with no clear agenda other than to learn about the country and the music scene. Once there, they were introduced to Joseph Nyamungu, a master of the lyre known as the nyatiti, who also educated them on the music and traditions of his tribe, the Luo of western Kenya. A four-day recording session developed, followed fourteen months later by another recording session with additional Kenyan musicians drafted by Nyamungu. The collaboration has produced three albums. Owour Won Gembe features the singing and nyatiti playing of Nyamungu front and center, and can be found on the Owiny Sigoma Band's 2015 album Nyanza.

A collaboration between the Balkans and Spain lies behind our random tune for today. The song is called Vino Tinto, and it is performed by Bosnian musician Goran Bregović with vocals by Spanish singer, songwriter and actress Bebe. A guitarist, Goran Bregović grew up in a divided family after his Croatian father and Serbian mother divorced due to his father's alcoholism. Bregović originally started music on the violin, but was deemed untalented. In high school he took up bass guitar, and eventually became a member of a number of bands, in particular the rock band Bijelo Dugme where he was lead guitar and the main creative force. When that band began to experience troubles, he entered the world of film music as well as embarking on a solo career where he collaborated with musicians such as Sezen Aksu and George Dalaras. His music was featured extensively on the film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. He also tours with his Weddings and Funerals Orchestra, which features small (10 member) and large (37 member) versions. His musical style is based on themes found in countries as varied as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Albania, Italy and Turkey, as well as Romani music. He combines these themes with popular music, traditional polyphonic music, tango and brass band sounds. Bebe is best known for her Latin Grammy award as Best New Artist in 2005 and her hit singles Malo and Ella. You can find Vino Tinto on Bregović's 2017 album Three Letters from Sarajevo (Opus 1). The song is the defiance of a woman about to leave her partner.

From Thibodaux to Fontaineaux: Warren Storm and "Jambalaya"

Louisiana's Warren Storm brings us today's random tune, one you'll recognize as a cover of an old Hank Williams tune with a zydeco flavor. A swamp pop drummer and vocalist, Warren Storm is from Abbeville, Louisiana who learned drums from his father, also a Cajun musician, and he began to perform in a band in the 1950s. Storm's musical tastes and sound was influenced greatly by trips to New Orleans to hear black rhythm and blues artists, and in the mid-50s he formed his own rhythm and blues and pop/rock band. He continued to release swamp pop music throughout the 60s and 70s for several labels, and was a house musician at several Louisiana dance clubs throughout the 80s and 90s. In 2000 he joined an all-star Louisiana band called Lil' Band O' Gold, and in 2010 he was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. This song, Jambalaya, can be found on the 1992 various artists compilation Cajun & Zydeco Mardi Gras.
