Our random tune for today is by Cathie Ryan, an Irish-American native of Detroit, Michigan. Ryan was exposed early to Irish musicians such as Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers as well as American musicians such as Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and Hank Williams. In her childhood she idolized her father, a tenor, who taught her how to interpret and honor songs by knowing their histories and contexts. She was also exposed to the music of Appalachia from neighbors who had migrated to Michigan to work in the auto factories and gained an appreciation for the likes of Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, as well as the local music out of Motown. Moving to New York, she learned more about traditional Irish music from her then husband singer-songwriter Dermot Henry and mentor Joe Heaney. After graduating from CUNY with a degree in English Literature and Secondary Education, she began teaching at Lehmann College in the Bronx, but left the classroom behind as her singing career began to blossom. She still continues to teach workshops in traditional Irish singing and Irish mythology and folklore. She was a member of the all female Celtic group Cherish the Ladies. This song, Erin's Lovely Home, can be found on her 1998 debut album The Music of What Happens. The song is an excerpt of a lament from the point of view of one fleeing the Irish famine in 1847, ending up on a ship where the protagonist loses his sisters to fever so that he is forced to roam America never to see his home again. Ryan changes the words a little, so that the protagonist is also buried at sea with the rest.

It Can Never Be: Kiran Ahluwalia and "Merey Mathay"

Today's random tume is by Kiran Ahluwalia, a singer of ghazals (ancient Arabic poetry) and Punjabi folk songs. Kiran Ahluwalia was born in India, raised in Canada and now lives in New York City. Kiran Ahluwalia immersed herself in Indian classical music and ghazals from age seven and spent a decade of deep and intense study with her guru in the 1990s. Her music has developed and provided innovation of the ghazal music genre, often through the introduction of non-traditional instrumentation and styles such as the Portuguese fado guitar, sub-Saharan percussion, Celtic fiddle, Pakistani qawwali vocals, Afghani rhubab and African blues. She has also collaborated with other world artists such as Rez Abbasi, Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq and electronica group Delerium. This song, Merey Mathay, is from her 2007 release Wanderlust. The song is a lament about two people who cannot be together.

Jazz trumpeter Etienne Charles brings us today's random tune, called One for Señor. Only in his 20s, Etienne Charles is making a name for himself as a compelling and exciting jazz artist. Charles was born in Trinidad but relocated first to Florida to attend Florida State and then to New York where he pursued jazz studies at the Julliard School of Music. Learning from his mentor, Florida State professor and jazz pianist Marcus Roberts, that to go forward one must go back, Charles has always started from traditional music and uses it as a basis for his jazz compositions. He has worked with artists as varied as Roberta Flack, Wynton Marsalis, and the Count Basie Orchestra. One for Señor can be found on his 2019 album Carnival: The Sound of a People, Vol. 5.

Bread and Circuses: Ani Cordero and "Panis et Circenses"

Today's song is by a rising star in the Latin music world. Panis et Circenses by Ani Cordero, a Puerto Rican-born musician who started her music career in Tucson, Arizona fronting a band bearing her own last name, Cordero. In 2000, accompanied by her husband, musician Chris Verene, Ani Cordero moved to New York, reformed the band and toured nationally with Calexico and Los Lobos, among others. By 2005, she had become quite well known in the New York rock scene, and she joined a new Latino pop and folklorico group called Pistolera. Panis et Circenses is from her first solo album Recordar: Latin American Songs of Love and Protest, in which she sings eleven songs of political and social significance in Latin America. It was released in April of 2014, and Panis et Circenses was written by the famous Brazilian artists Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil and originally performed by Brazilian psychedelic group Os Mutantes.

Raga Bayragi is by Baraka Moon, a Pakistani, Indian, Australian, American band which fuses the above with didgeridoo, global drums and guitar to create music that transcends boundaries. Legend has it that they were founded on the night of a full moon eclipse in 2008. Raga Bayragi can be found on their 2011 CD Baraka Moon.

Soku It Up: Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder with "Banga"

Today's random tune explores a common musical legacy and interests. Banga is by the great Malian guitarist and singer Ali Farka Touré and the American musician, songwriter, composer and producer Ry Cooder. Ali Farka Touré was a Malian singer, multi-instrumentalist and one of the most renowned African musicians. His music fits right into the intersection of traditional Malian music and North American blues. Known as the "African John Lee Hooker," he sang in several African languages. In 2004, he became mayor of a small town and spent his own money on improving infrastructure. He died in 2006 of bone cancer. Ry Cooder is an American producer and guitarist known for his slide guitar and his interest in roots music. He has collaborated with many musicians both from the US and abroad, and his albums have covered many different genres, including folk, blues, Tex-Mex, soul, gospel and rock among others. He also produced the worldwide hit album Buena Vista Social Club. Banga can be found on their Grammy-award winning collaboration Talking Timbuktu (1994). I believe the fiddle-like sound on this track is a soku, a Malian single string fiddle.

A Melange: Väsen with Mike Marshall and Darol Anger and "Misch Masch"

Some American folk musicians mingle with Swedish folk musicians to create today's random tune, Misch Masch. Väsen is a Swedish folk music ensemble formed officially in 1990 for a music gathering in Norway. Väsen plays traditional instruments such as the nyckelharpa but it was adding a guitar that gave the band a unique sound. They play on this song with American mandolin player Mike Marshall, a leader in the New Acoustic Music movement that blends folk, bluegrass, jazz and world music. Also featured on the song is Marshall's longtime collaborator Darol Anger, an American violinist with an extensive background in jazz, folk and classical music. Misch Masch can be found on the 2007 album Mike Marshall & Darol Anger with Väsen.

Our random song for today is by Paul Avgerinos and is called Garden of Delight. Paul Avgerinos is an American composer, performer and producer whose genres include new age, ambient, space, world, world fusion, electronic and drone. Avgerinos attended Johns Hopkins University's Peabody School of Music where he studied bass violin. His albums are blends of well known and obscure acoustic and electronic instruments. He is known for using Romantic and Impressionist techniques, and he has worked with such artists as Aerosmith, Jewel, Run DMC, Willie Nelson, Deana Carter and The Celtic Tenors. Garden of Delight is the title song from his 2007 CD.

Bad for the Teeth, Good for the Soul: Cibo Matto and "Sugar Water"

Today's random song is by Japanese pop/trip-hop/hip-hop/Shibuya-kei group Cibo Matto. Cibo Matto (Italian for Crazy Food) was formed in 1994 in New York City by Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori. They originally focused their songs around food, but with the addition of band members Sean Lennon, Timo Ellis and Duma Love they expanded their repertoire. The band became very popular in the United States but surprisingly less so in Japan even though the founding members are Japanese expatriates. They have released three albums, two EPs and five singles as well as a compilation. This song, Sugar Water, can be found on their 1996 album Viva! La Woman. The video was directed by Michael Gondry, who received an Academy Award as a screenwriter for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Kiss Me Mama: Poncho Sanchez with Mongo Santamaria and "Bésamé Mamá"

Today's random song is from Mexican American conga player Poncho Sanchez and Cuban rumba quinto master Mongo Santamaria. Born in Laredo, Texas and raised in California, Sanchez took to Afro-Cuban music and bebop jazz. He originally was a guitarist and singer, and after teaching himself flute, drums and timbales, he settled on the conga as his instrument of choice. He has recorded 35 albums since 1980. Mongo Santamaria was an African-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist whose mix of R&B and Latin rhythms helped inspire the boogaloo of the 1960s. He also was a bandleader, whose bands featured the likes of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, and it was during these times that he began to Afro-Cuban and African American music to great acclaim. This song, Bésamé Mamá, can be found on Poncho Sanchez's 1995 album Conga Blue, and on the various artists compilation CD Putumayo Presents: ¡Latino! ¡Latino! (1997).

Providing a Spark: Charanga Cakewalk and "Chispas"

Today's song is performed by Charanga Cakewalk and is called Chispas. Charanga Cakewalk is the brainchild of Michael Ramos. Ramos is a Latino Chicano Mexican who also describes himself as a citizen of the world. A once sideman and rocker who played with John Mellencamp, Paul Simon, Patty Griffin and others and was a sometime member of the BoDeans and The Rembrandts, he maintained a keen interest in the Latino music of his childhood. Ramos has made Charanga Cakewalk the leading proponent of a style called cumbia lounge. Within his musical landscapes, you might hear tejano, flamenco, merengue, salsa, garage rock, ska and reggaeton. Charanga Cakewalk has released three albums. Chispas is from his 2004 album Loteria de la Cumbia Lounge.

No Cop Out: Vieux Farka Touré and Julie Easterlin with "Took My Brother Down"

Took My Brother Down, today's random song, is performed by Malian musician Vieux Farka Touré and American singer-songwriter Julia Easterlin. A Malian singer and guitarist. Touré first took up guitar in secret because his father disapproved and enrolled in the National Institute of the Arts in Bamako. He released his first album in 2005 after getting permission from his father and the great Malian musician Toumani Diabaté He has since released seven albums and has collaborated with other musicians from around the world, including Israeli Idan Raichel in the Touré-Raichel Collective. Julia Easterlin, now performing under the name of Hite, has been described by the Boston Globe as a one-woman a capella group due to her use of a looping machine that allows her to layer her own voice. Her musical style includes jazz, gospel and Southern folk, and she lists Björk and Philip Glass as influences on her music. Took My Brother Down can be found on Easterlin's and Touré's album Touristes (2015).

The song is very current, given the number of police shootings in our country in recent years.

Green Willow for a Year: The Poor Clares and "All Around My Hat"

The Poor Clares, an Irish band formed in New Orleans in 1993, sings today's random tune, called All Around My Hat. The Poor Clares, upon establishment, had an auspicious debut at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest). They were not the typical Irish band, mixing their own compositions in with traditional Irish music and also throwing in some New Orleans jazz and Cajun music as well. After one of their founding members, Beth Patterson, left the group, they reformed under the name Re Mor (Gaelic for Big Easy). You can find All Around My Hat on their 1996 album Resurrected Lover. You can hear some of their unique sound in this funky take on an English traditional song from the 19th century.

Hassan's Got Chops: Balkan Beat Box featuring Hassan ben Jaffar and Har'el Shachal with "Hassan's Mimuna"

Our random tune for today is by Balkan Beat Box, founded in 2003 by Tamir Muskat and Ori Kaplan in New York City. An Israeli band, their goal is to take ancient and traditional music and combine it with hip hop to create a more modern sound that would appeal to people in dancehalls and clubs. They cite as influences Boban Marković, Rachid Taha, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Manu Chao, and Charlie Parker. This song, Hassan's Mimuna, features Hassan Ben Jaffar and Har'el Shachal. Hassan ben Jaffar is a Moroccan master of Gnawa music, while Har'el Shachal is an Israeli performer on Middle Eastern G clarinet and saxophone. Hassan's Mimuna is from Balkan Beat Box's 2005 eponymous debut release.
