Is Grilled an Option: Willie Bobo and "Broasted or Fried"

Willie Bobo performs today's random tune, called Broasted or Fried. The stage name of William Correa, an Latino percussionist of Puerto Rican ancestry who grew up in New York City's Spanish Harlem. He became a friend and student of Mongo Santamaria in the early 1950s, and performed with Tito Puente from around 1953-57. He was given his stage name by jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams during that era. In the 1960s he reunited with Santamaria and later formed his own band. In the 1970s he moved to Los Angeles, and besides doing his own recordings he also served as a session musician with Carlos Santana, who recorded Evil Ways, originally recorded by Bobo. Willie Bobo succumbed to cancer at the age of 49 in 1983. His son Eric Bobo performs with Cypress Hill and performed with the Beastie Boys on their 1994 Ill Communication. Broasted or Fried can be found on the Willie Bobo and the Bo Gents 1971 album Do What You Want to Do.

Boundary-less: Malika Zarra and "No Borders"

Today's random tune, No Borders, is performed by Malika Zarra. Zarra was born in Morocco to a Berber mother and a Moroccan father and she grew up in Paris though her family remained culturally Moroccan in the home. She became interested in jazz because she noticed its improvisational similarities to Arab music, and studied jazz in Tours and Marseilles. She began getting attention when she started singing jazz standards with her own Arab translations. She is influenced by styles such as traditional Berber music, Gnawa music, Chaabi, French popular music, jazz, house, funk, dance, and traditional African music, and her personal influences include artists such as Farid al-Atrash, Um Kalthoum, Warda Al-Jazairia, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby McFerrin, Thelonious Monk, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin. You can find No Borders on her 2011 CD Berber Taxi. While the song sounds like it has lyrics, it is really Zarra's wordless voice playing off the bass playing of the song's composer, Mamadou Ba.

A Heartache: Stan Getz and João Gilberto with Antonio Carlos Jobim and "Para Machucar Meu Coraçao"

Our random tune for today is by two legends of jazz, Stan Getz and João Gilberto. The song, Para Machucar Meu Coraçao, also features pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim. Stan Getz was an American jazz saxophonist known as The Sound because of the warmth of his tone. João Gilberto is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist whose recordings established the Brazilian genre of bossa nova in the late 1950s. Antonio Carlos Jobim was a Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist. His songs were instrumental in the creation of bossa nova. You can find Para Machucar Meu Coraçao, which translates to "For Hurting My Heart," on the seminal jazz album Getz/Gilberto (1964). This is also the album that introduced the world to the Jobim classic The Girl From Ipanema, as well as the voice of Astrud Gilberto. The album won Grammy Awards in 1965 for Best Album, Best Jazz Instrumental Album, and Best Engineered Album (non-classical) as well as Record of the Year for The Girl From Ipanema. It is ranked number 446 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Paolo Conte brings us today's random tune, called Colleghi Trascurati. Conte was born in Asti in the Piedmont region of Italy, and he began his music career as a vibraphone player traveling in local and touring bands. He started writing songs early on in his career with his brother Giorgio but eventually began writing on his own. His star rose in the 60s and 70s as he was the main creative songwriter behind hits of other well-known Italian artists. His solo career commenced in 1974. His songs are known for being evocative of colorful and dreamy Italian and Mediterranean sounds. His music is often jazzy, reminiscent of South America and French singers, and filled with a wistful melancholy. His music has also been used in many movies. Colleghi Trascurati can be found on his 1990 album Parole D'Amore Scritte a Macchina, and on the 1998 CD The Best of Paolo Conte.

Ethiopia's Jazz Master Flash: Hailu Mergia and "Lala Belu"

Today's upbeat song is by Ethiopian jazz musician Hailu Mergia. An accordionist who also plays keyboards, Mergia takes traditional Ethiopian songs and creates modern, funkier versions of them. During the 1970s, he was the keyboardist for The Walias Band, an Ethiopian western-influenced jazz and funk band. He and the band tended to create instrumentals as a way around Ethiopia's strict censorship laws at the time. During this time, he and The Walias Band recorded a seminal album of Ethiopian jazz instrumentals called Tche Belew. On a tour of the United States with the band in 1983, Mergia and other band musicians decided to stay in the US and he enrolled at Howard University. In 1985, while reacquainting himself with the accordion, he laid down 11 improvisational tracks on accordion, electric piano and synthesizer in a studio at Howard. The album was released in Ethiopia under the title Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument and was a hit, but wasn't released in the United States until 2013. He currently drives a cab in Washington, DC where he practices keyboard between customers. This song, Lala Belu, is from his new 2018 release of the same name.

The Rain is Coming: Regina Carter and "Kothbiro"

Today's random tune is by Detroit-born jazz violinist Regina Carter, who reinterprets an African song called Kothbiro that was composed and sung by Kenyan musician and nyatiti lyre player Ayub Ogada in 1993. Regina Carter began studying the violin along with piano when she was four years old. In high school she took master classes with Itzhak Perlman and Yehudi Menuhin and eventually studied classical music at the New England Conservatory of Music. However, she switched to jazz during her classical studies and finished out her education at Oakland University in Michigan. After graduation, she did a stint teaching music in the Detroit Public Schools, but needing a break and a new direction, she moved to Germany for two years. When she came back in the late 1980s, she joined the all-female quintet Straight Ahead, which did pop and jazz and earned kudos from Branford Marsalis. She went solo in 1991 and has released ten solo albums since 1995, and has played on another seventeen albums in collaboration with a wide variety of musicians such as Kenny Barron, Anthony Davis, Cassandra Wilson, Joe Jackson and Eddie Palmieri. Kothbiro can be found on her 2010 album Reverse Thread. She records the song as an instrumental - the original has lyrics and is about the coming of rain.

A Surprise Every Day: Zaz and "J'aime À Nouveau"

Today's random song is by French singer-songwriter Isabelle Geffroy, known by her stage name Zaz. Mixing jazzy style, French variety, soul and acoustic genres, she became famous on the strength of her first album, the eponymously named Zaz (2011). After a childhood steeped in music education she started her musical career in 2001 singing in musical groups and as a backup singer. She released Zaz in 2011 to great acclaim, especially her single Je Veux, and has since won awards and has toured extensively. She has released two more albums since, Recto Verso and Paris. Kiss Me Mama: Poncho Sanchez with Mongo Santamaria and "Bésamé Mamá"

Today's random song is from Mexican American conga player Poncho Sanchez and Cuban rumba quinto master Mongo Santamaria. Born in Laredo, Texas and raised in California, Sanchez took to Afro-Cuban music and bebop jazz. He originally was a guitarist and singer, and after teaching himself flute, drums and timbales, he settled on the conga as his instrument of choice. He has recorded 35 albums since 1980. Mongo Santamaria was an African-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist whose mix of R&B and Latin rhythms helped inspire the boogaloo of the 1960s. He also was a bandleader, whose bands featured the likes of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, and it was during these times that he began to Afro-Cuban and African American music to great acclaim. This song, Bésamé Mamá, can be found on Poncho Sanchez's 1995 album Conga Blue, and on the various artists compilation CD Putumayo Presents: ¡Latino! ¡Latino! (1997).

Wanna Be Startin' Something: Hugh Masekela and "Rock With You"

The late South African jazz trumpeter, cornetist, flugelhornist, composer and singer Hugh Masekela brings us today's random tune. Hugh Masekela began singing and playing piano as a child, but took up the trumpet after seeing Kirk Douglas play a trumpeter modeled on Bix Beiderbecke in the movie Young Man with a Horn. His music has always reflected his life experience during South Africa's apartheid era, and through his music he reached a large portion of the population living through the oppression. He helped form and played with the groundbreaking group The Jazz Epistles, the first African jazz group to record an LP. He is known in the United States for his interpretation of the 5th Dimension's Up, Up and Away (1967) and his hit Grazing in the Grass (1968). He was once married to singer Miriam Makeba, and he toured with Paul Simon in support of his Graceland album. He has also worked with African artists of all stripes, and he is involved in a number of South African social initiatives. This song, Rock With You, is a cover of the Michael Jackson song and can be found on his 1992 album Beatin' Aroun de Bush.

Storyteller and Stud: Sotiw and "Kokopelli Shuffle"

Our random tune for today is by Sotiw, pronounced So-too. Made up of Native American flautist Michael Joseph Ulery and guitarist Derek Mortland, Sotiw combines New Age, eclectic, world and fusion jazz styles to create a musical world with no boundaries. The two musicians were initially drawn together by their heavy metal past, but found an instinctual kindred in writing music. In addition, Mortland had to relearn guitar after suffering a paralyzing injury in a motorcycle accident, and in the process of relearning he also redefined his musical perspective by breaking through new barriers. This song, Kokopelli Shuffle, highlights both of their abilities and this new direction, between the traditional flute rhythmically matching the guitar's dissonance. The song is named after the Southwestern Native American trickster and fertility god. You can find Kokopelli Shuffle on Sotiw's 2007 album Sketches in Time.

Fantastic Fox: Kuma Lisa with "Summer Dream"

Happy New Year! Our first song to start off the new year, on what for many of you may be a cold winter day, is called Summer Dream by Kuma Lisa. An international trio based in East London, the band's name is based on a fox from folktales from Eastern European countries. The members are Mariana Bogdanova on lead vocals, percussion and acoustic guitar, Rupert Gillett on 6 & 12 string guitars, double bass, cello, salaw (a stringed instrument from southeast Asia), bass pedals and vocals, and Rob Stutterheim on piano, accordion and vocals. The band mixes folk from eastern and western Europe with pop and jazz influences. You can find Summer Dream on their 2013 album Kuma Lisa.
