Today's random tune is by Gaby Hernandez and is called My Baobab Tree. A Chilean-American musician from Los Angeles, Gaby Hernandez is a founding member of the soul music ensemble Build an Ark, with whom she has recorded and performed since 2001. Her influences are Sade and Karen Carpenter. I couldn't find much more information on her, though. My Baobab Tree can be found on her 2017 album Spirit Reflection.

Is Grilled an Option: Willie Bobo and "Broasted or Fried"

Willie Bobo performs today's random tune, called Broasted or Fried. The stage name of William Correa, an Latino percussionist of Puerto Rican ancestry who grew up in New York City's Spanish Harlem. He became a friend and student of Mongo Santamaria in the early 1950s, and performed with Tito Puente from around 1953-57. He was given his stage name by jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams during that era. In the 1960s he reunited with Santamaria and later formed his own band. In the 1970s he moved to Los Angeles, and besides doing his own recordings he also served as a session musician with Carlos Santana, who recorded Evil Ways, originally recorded by Bobo. Willie Bobo succumbed to cancer at the age of 49 in 1983. His son Eric Bobo performs with Cypress Hill and performed with the Beastie Boys on their 1994 Ill Communication. Broasted or Fried can be found on the Willie Bobo and the Bo Gents 1971 album Do What You Want to Do.

They sport a wide range of styles, including salsa, jazz, funk, reggae, and rap among other styles. They are also advocates for farm workers rights and immigration reform. The band takes its name from the Aztec calendar, in particular the astrological symbol of the monkey. Ozomatli is also a god of dance, fire, the new harvest, and music. This song, Violeta, is from their 2067 album Don't Mess with the Dragon. The song's lyrics seem to be a last goodbye from a soldier dying on the battlefield to his love.

Today's song is by Ozomatli, which plays Latin, hip hop and rock music. Now a six piece ensemble, Ozomatli was formed in Los Angeles in 1995 and have made a name for the wide range of styles that they play such as salsa, jazz, funk, reggae, rap and other genres. Their name comes from the Nahuatl word for the monkey astrological symbol from the Aztec calendar - Ozomatli is the god of dance, new harvest, fire and music. They got an early break when Carlos Santana used them for his opening act on his 1998 Supernatural tour. They are also known their social and political activism, including fighting for Latino and workers' rights. This song, Chango, is from their 1998 debut album Ozomatli, and a live version can be found on their 2005 album Live at the Fillmore.

Cambodian Pyschedelia: Dengue Fever and "Hold My Hips"

Los Angeles band Dengue Fever brings us our random tune for today. Dengue Fever is a six member band that was formed in 2001 by Ethan and Zac Holtzman after Ethan was inspired by a trip to Cambodia. A search for a vocalist led them to Chhom Nimol, who they found in a Long Beach nightclub. She was already a well-known karaoke singer in Cambodia and had moved to the United States to join her sister and make money to send home. The band released their first album in 2003 which consisted mostly of covers of 60s Cambodian rock tunes. In 2005 they toured Cambodia to critical acclaim. They've released 10 albums and EPs, and support a variety of charitable organizations that provide aid to Cambodia. This song, Hold My Hips, can be found on their 2009 album Sleepwalking Through the Mekong.
