An international group, Ladama's members hail from Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and the United States, and the band holds educational workshops featuring interactive musical experiences that seeks to empower women and youth. A Great Time of Day: Sergio Mendes and "After Sunrise"

Today's tune is by the master of Brazilian inflected pop, Sergio Mendes. Sergio Mendes came along at just the time that bossa nova, a genre that combines samba with jazz, was becoming popular and he was mentored by and played with one of the founders of bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim. It wasn't until Mendes came to the United States and started recording and touring, however, that he started to attract attention. Signing with producing legend Ahmet Ertegun and Atlantic Records, he cut some jazz albums in Portuguese which had low sales. After moving over to A&M Records and taking the advice of his partner Richard Adler, he began recording material in English and included a backing group of women who could sing in both English and Portuguese. He also began touring with A&M cofounder Herb Alpert, which helped with exposure. Various incarnations of his group, including Brasil '65, Brasil '66 and Brasil '77 cut massive hits - often covering American and British hit songs with a bossa nova/flair but also bringing contemporary Brazilian tunes, like Jorge Ben's Mas Que Nada, to an American audience. He has also worked with a who's who of American musicians, such as Herb Alpert, Stevie Wonder and The Black Eyed Peas. Mendes is still working, and was nominated for an Oscar as recently as 2012 for his composition Real in Rio for the animated film Rio. You can find this song, After Sunrise, on his 1972 compilation album Four Sider, and on his 1972 album Primal Roots.

Comes at You Like a Whirlwind: Max Fairbanks and "Saci"

A Brazilian trickster is the focus of today's random tune, called Saci. It is performed by Max Fairbanks, on whom I can't really find any information. However, Saci as a trickster presents himself as a one-legged mulatto young person, usually wearing a magic red cap and smoking a pipe, and who disappears in and out of dust devils and can also turn himself into an elusive bird with a song that comes from nowhere. At best Saci is annoying, and does things like hides childrens' toys, sets farm animals loose, sets the dogs to barking and spills things in the kitchen. At worst he is malicious and dangerous, but if you manage to catch him and take his red cap, he will grant you wishes, though you might never get rid of the horrific smell of the cap. You might also manage to bottle him up when he is in the dust devil. It is speculated that the origins of the Saci myth came from the European mythical creature called the Monopod. But, whatever the origin, just know that when something goes wrong, it was probably Saci's fault. You can find Max Fairbanks' song Saci on his 2003 album Certos Prazeres.

There He Comes: Luisa Maita and "Aí Vem Ele"

Today's random tune is Aí Vem Ele by Luisa Maita, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. Born into a musical family in São Paulo, Brazil, she learned to sing samba and bossa nova as well as her father's compositions, and her professional career began at age seven singing jingles. She founded her first band, Urbanda, in 1999 and began collaborating with musicians from her generation. A collaboration with Brazilian singer Virginia Rosa, who recorded two of Maita's songs for one of her albums, encouraged Maita to continue writing songs. In 2010 she recorded her solo album Lero-Lero, which led National Public Radio to hail her as the "New Voice of Brazil." Her music draws inspiration from the samba, but also pop influences such as Michael Jackson, Prince and Stevie Wonder. You can find Aí Vem Ele on her 2010 release Lero-Lero.

Forgive Me: Ana Costa and Oswaldo Cavalo with "Pra Que Pedir Perdão"

Today's random tune is by Ana Costa.  A singer of samba, the lively Brazilian music that provided the basis for bossa nova, Ana Costa is one of the newer voices carrying the samba torch. She started in rough bars in a region just north of Rio de Janeiro, and was one of the founders of the all-female samba group Roda de Saia, later known as O Roda. She joined Martinho Da Vila's daughter Mart'nalia in a band and toured Brazil, the US and Europe, and began eventually to write songs.  This song, Pra Que Pedir Perdão, can be found with just her voice on her 2005 album Meu Carnaval, and this version with Oswaldo Cavalo, about whom I couldn't find much information, on the various artists compilation album Putumayo Presents: Brazilian Cafe (2009).

When Carnival Comes: Marcia Salomon and "Quando o Carnaval Chegar"

Today's tune is called Quando o Carnaval Chegar, and is performed by Marcia Salomon, a bossa nova singer from Brazil who began her music career in the 1970s but didn't record her first album until 1990 after being discovered singing in a bar by guitarist Roberto Menescal. She has since released four albums. Quando o Carnaval Chegar was first recorded by the great Brazilian singer and composer Chico Buarque and is an ode to the life and spirit that is released during Carnival time. You can find this cover on Salomon's 1997 album De Lalá Pra Cá, and on the 2009 various artists compilation Putumayo Presents: Brazilian Café.

Lighting It Up: Nei Lopes with Dudu Nobre and "Fumo de Rolo"

Today's song is Fumo de Rolo by Nei Lopes. Lopes is a 74 year old samba singer and composer who also happens to be a lawyer, writer and historian. Trained in the law by the University of Brazil, he abandoned his career in the 1970s to take up music. A partnership with prominent samba artist Wilson Moreira led to many compositions that are now recorded by almost all interpreters of traditional samba. In the 1980s, he was a leader of the pagode movement which brought traditional samba back to the radio airwaves after it had been briefly superseded by such new genres as bossa nova. Lopes has written extensively on Afro-Brazilian and samba themes and since 1995 has been working on his sweeping Brazilian Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora. Fumo de Rolo is from Lopes' 2001 CD De Letra & Musica and he is joined on the song by Brazilian singer and composer Dudu Nobre.

A Heartache: Stan Getz and João Gilberto with Antonio Carlos Jobim and "Para Machucar Meu Coraçao"

Our random tune for today is by two legends of jazz, Stan Getz and João Gilberto. The song, Para Machucar Meu Coraçao, also features pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim. Stan Getz was an American jazz saxophonist known as The Sound because of the warmth of his tone. João Gilberto is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist whose recordings established the Brazilian genre of bossa nova in the late 1950s. Antonio Carlos Jobim was a Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist. His songs were instrumental in the creation of bossa nova. You can find Para Machucar Meu Coraçao, which translates to "For Hurting My Heart," on the seminal jazz album Getz/Gilberto (1964). This is also the album that introduced the world to the Jobim classic The Girl From Ipanema, as well as the voice of Astrud Gilberto. The album won Grammy Awards in 1965 for Best Album, Best Jazz Instrumental Album, and Best Engineered Album (non-classical) as well as Record of the Year for The Girl From Ipanema. It is ranked number 446 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Spicy: Dona Onete and "Jamburana"

Today's random tune is by the "Queen of Carimbo," Brazilian singer and composer Dona Onete. From the region of Pará, at an early age of fifteen she was singing traditional music such as boi bumba, samba and quadrilles. She has researched the rhythms, dances and traditions of her home region so that she can present it in her music, and has established music and dance groups in order to foster preservation of the music and culture of the region. Known internationally, Dona Onete has performed throughout Brazil, Europe and the United States. Her accomplishments and contributions to the art of Brazil gained her Brazil's Ordem do Mérito Cultural. This song, Jamburana, can be found on her 2014 album Feitiço Cabloco. The song sings the praises of an herb used in the cooking of the Pará region.

In the Midst of Winter, Thinking Warm: Bebel Gilberto and "August Day Song"

Our random tune for today is rendered by Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto. A popular singer often associated with bossa nova, she is the daughter of João Gilberto and the singer Miúcha. Born in New York City in 1966 while her parents lived there for a brief time, she traveled as a child with her father and eventually settled in Rio de Janeiro with her mother, traveling back and forth between her parents in Rio and New York. Through her father she became acquainted with his collaborators Caetano Veloso, David Byrne, and Stan Getz. She also began singing with her mother, and at age seven made her debut on her mother's first solo album, Miúcha and Antônio Carlos Jobim. In 1979 she performed with her mother and Stan Getz at Carnegie Hall. She released her first album, an EP, in 1986, and her first full-length album of electronic bossa nova in 2000. She redefined her style in her second album, Bebel Gilberto, to an acoustic lounge style. In her third album, Momento, she fused both electronic bossa nova and acoustic lounge together. She continues to perform and record. This song, August Day Song, can be found on her 2000 release titled Tanto Tempo.

Martial Art: Mestre Saussuna & Dirceu with "A Morte do Capoeira"

Merry Christmas! Our random tune today is from Brazil and is called A Morte do Capoeira. It is performed by Mestre Saussuna & Dirceu. Reinaldo Ramos Suassuna, who also is known as Mestre Saussuna, is the founder and the head of an international capoeira organization called Cordão de Ouro. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art combining dance, acrobatics and music. Saussuna began practicing capoeira in the 1950s as treatment for a physical handicap in his legs. He has since produced many capoeira shows and has released four CDs, as well as conducting workshops in Brazil and internationally. He has also created a capoeira discipline called the Miudinho Game, with a distinctive rhythm based in the berimbau, which has become known as the distinctive discipline of his school of capoeira. You can find A Morte do Capoeira on his album Capoeira - Cordão de Ouro, released in 1994.

A Spring Storm: Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina with "Águas de Março"

Antonio Carlos Jobim, a giant of Brazilian music who is credited with developing the bossa nova style wrote today's random song and performed it with Elis Regina, a woman who, at the time of the recording, was considered Brazil's greatest living vocalist. Águas de Março (Waters of March) was written by Jobim as a series of images inspired by flooding streets during a rainstorm. On the strength of songs like this, and his most famous song Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema), his music crossed over from Brazil into the jazz repertoire of the United States. He collaborated with such jazz icons such as Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto and ushered a bossa nova craze into American culture. Elis Regina died at the age of 36 from an accidental drug overdose. She is widely considered to be one of Brazil's greatest singers, moving from bossa nova in the 1960s to tropicalismo in the 1970s. She was often at odds with the Brazilian dictatorship, but was insulated in part by her great popularity. Her funeral procession was followed by more than 100,000 people through the streets of Sao Paolo, all singing her songs. You can find Águas de Março on the 1990 album Bossa Nova - Trinta Anos Depois.

Today's song is by the band 3030, and is the acoustic version of their song Ogum. A Brazilian rap and hip hop group, the band hails from Rio de Janeiro but its members all have their musical roots in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The band tries to avoid looking and sounding like a conventional rap group in both its music and performances. You can find Ogum on their 2016 album Acústico 3030. The song is a prayer to take the evilness away from the world.

Today's song is called Niran and is performed by Bixiga 70, a Brazilian band from São Paulo that plays music based in elements of jazz, African, Afrobeat, Brazilian and Latin music. Their name refers to the address of the studio where the band was born in 2010. They take as inspirations African musicians such as Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke, as well as Brazilian musicians such as Gilberto Gil, Pedro Santos, Os Tincoãs, Baden Powell and others. In 2014, they received the Award of Brazilian Music. This video is a live performance of Niran, which can be found on Bixiga 70's 2015 album III.
