They Got Brass Ones: Kočani Orkestar and "Kalino Mome"
Our random song for today is by the Kočani Orkestar, a Republic of North Macedonian Romani brass band. The band takes Balkan brass band styles that are descended from Ottoman army brass bands, along with gypsy tunes, Turkish rhythms, and a little bit of Latin styles, and really funks it up. You may recognize their music from the movie Borat - a song was used without their authorization. This song, Kalino Mome, can be heard on their 2008 CD The Ravished Bride.

Wishful Thinking: Hackney Colliery Band and "It's Normally Bigger"
Today's random tune is by London-based group Hackney Colliery Band. Describing themselves a "New Orleans-style line up of trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and two drummers, and a name which pays homage to the British brass heritage," they have played in clubs across Europe, collaborated with musicians such as Amy Winehouse, and have created three hit albums. They describe their music as being influenced by contemporary rock, electronica, jazz and global brass. Their name is taken from the East London neighborhood from whence they came. You can find this song, It's Normally Bigger, on their 2016 release Sharpener.

Tightly: Cha Wa and "Hold 'Em Joe"
From New Orleans comes today's random tune, called Hold 'Em Joe. The song is performed by Cha Wa, a band that melds New Orleans brass band sounds with the Mardi Gras Indian musical tradition and explores contemporary interpretations of traditional Mardi Gras Indian songs through the vocals of Big Chief Monk Boudreaux of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indian tribe. Founded by drummer Joe Gelini, the band also features J'wan Boudreaux, grandson of Monk Boudreaux and himself the spyboy for the tribe. The name of the group, Cha Wa, means "we're coming for you" in the Mardi Gras Indian vernacular. You can find Hold 'Em Joe on Cha Wa's debut album Funk 'n' Feathers (2016).

Did Someone Say Crawdad: Fanfare Ciocarlia and "Crayfish Hora"
Today's random tune is by Romani brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia. Known as one of Europe's most popular contemporary Romani bands, and noted for their high energy and fast sound, their sound is ultimately rooted in Austrian and Turkish marching bands. The ensemble was formed in 1996 in northeastern Romania by musicians from that area and Moldova. Their music easily crossed over, pleasing world music audiences and rock and rave fans, who took to its speed and Eastern style. They are also pioneers of the dance music genre known as Balkan Beats. You can find this song, Crayfish Hora, on their 2016 album Onwards to Mars!, which is a return to their roots as a high speed Balkan party band.

Get Your Drink On: Boban & Marko Marković Orchestra with "Sljivovica"
Boban Marković is a Serbian Romani trumpet player and brass ensemble leader frequently recognized as the greatest trumpet player to emerge from the Balkans. The Boban Marković Orchestra has been one of the leading Balkan brass bands in Serbia over the last 17 years. They have won several of the most important prizes ("Golden Trumpet", "First Trumpet" and "The Best Orchestra") at the Guča trumpet festival, called "Dragačevski Sabor" which has been held every August in Central Serbia's town of Guča since 1961. Boban Marković's son, Marko, has played with the band since 2002. Marko was said to practice ten hours a day before joining with the band. During the two years he spent touring with the band, Marko became the main soloist and arranger of the renamed Boban & Marko Marković Orchestra at age 17. This song, Sljivovica, can be found on the Boban & Marko Markovic Orchestra's 2013 album Gipsy Manifesto. The song celebrates the national drink of Serbia.
