A blog about world and global music from a guy who co-hosts the KUNM Global Music Show, 89.9 FM Albuquerque/Santa Fe, http://www.kunm.org. I post one song a day, with reflections on the music, life, and whatever else comes into my mind.

If You Have No Shelter: Xutos e Pontapés with "Se Não Tens Abrigo"
Our random tune for today is by Portuguese rock band Xutos e Pontapés. Formed in 1978 in Almada, Portugal about four years after the Portuguese dictatorship ended, Xutos & Pontapés started off as a punk rock band and blazed a trail by singing rock in Portuguese. In 2009 they celebrated 30 years in the music business, and as Portugal's top rock band, with a huge three hour concert in Lisbon's Estádio do Restelo football stadium. Their name references different kinds of "kicks." Xutos (pronounced Chute-ohs) means to kick a ball or object, but in this context is slang for heroin injection. Pontapés means kicks on people. You can find this song, Se Não Tens Abrigo, in a live version on their 2002 album Sei Onde Tu Estás! (Ao Vivo 2001), on their 2009 album VIII, on their 2016 live acoustic album Se Me Amas (Acústico) [Ao Vivo], and on their 2018 live album Estádio do Restelo 2009. The song references the uncertainty of having nowhere to shelter oneself from life's storms.
