Dancing Candles and Lanterns: Loreena McKennitt and "All Souls Night"
A mysterious beautiful song called All Souls Night is our random tune for today. It is performed by Loreena McKennitt, a Canadian known for her soprano voice. She is a composer, harpist, accordionist and pianist who writes and performs world music with Celtic and Middle Eastern themes. She released her first album in 1985, and since then has gone on to release nine studio albums and five live albums which have sold 14 million copies worldwide. Her songs have also been featured in television and movies. All Souls Night can be found on McKennitt's 1992 album The Visit. Still Drinking: Old Blind Dogs and "Come A' Ye Kincardine Lads"
Today's random tune is by Old Blind Dogs, who perform Come A' Ye Kincardine Lads. Old Blind Dogs were formed in 1990 when the three founding members met on a "buskers holiday" in the Scottish Highlands. The band was originally distinctive as it represented the music and traditions of Northeastern Scotland and sang in the dialect of Aberdeen and the region. The band focuses on traditional Scottish and Celtic music, with influences from rock, reggae, jazz, blues and Middle Eastern rhythms. Come A' Ye Kincardine Lads can be found on their 2006 album Fit?, and in a live version on their 2005 CD Play Live as Kincardine Lads. Little Man: Orbestra and "Los Cholitos"
United Kingdom-based Orbestra brings us today's random tune, called Los Cholitos. Orbestra began as eight classical musicians in 1989 who chose to focus on music of the world from various regions such as Africa, Colombia, Macedonia, Shetland and Spain, especially Eastern European folk music. Their instrumentation consists of clarinet, cello, bassoon, double bass, tarambuka, teppan, mbira, bamboo flute, trombone, and violin accompanied by voice. The group's name is a mashup of "orb," as in the globe, and orchestra. Los Cholitos can be found on their 1992 debut CD, Transdanubian Swineherds' Music. The song's title is probably a reference to term of endearment to a child, but it can also be used for derogatory or profane purposes.

Waltz of the Big Marsh: Beausoleil and "Valse de Grand Meche"
Today's random tune is by Louisiana Cajun band BeauSoleil. BeauSoleil was founded in 1975, released its first album in 1977 and became one of the most well-known groups playing traditional and original music in the Creole tradition of Louisiana. They have also gone beyond the traditional, incorporating rock and roll, jazz, blues, calypso and other genres. They are an extensive touring band, and they sing in both English and Colonial Louisiana French. The band takes its name from Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil, who led the Acadian resistance to British deportation from Canada and led 193 exiles to safety in Louisiana. The band almost didn't come to be - Michael Doucet, one of the founders, was going to New Mexico to study Romantic Poets, but he won a Folk Arts Apprenticeship sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. As he puts it: "I traded William Blake for Dewey Balfa," and he sought out every living Cajun/Creole performer to learn what he could about Cajun music and their techniques. He even encouraged some to resume performing. BeauSoleil are one of the few Creole/Cajun groups to win a Grammy. This song, Valse de Grand Meche, can be found on their 1997 album The Best of Beausoleil and on the Michael Doucet with Beausoleil 2011 album Parlez-Nous A Boire & More.

Trickster or Poet: Sergio Vesely and "Kosmisches Karussell (Dr. Owlglass)"
Our random tune for today is by Sergio Vesely, and is called Kosmisches Karussell (Dr. Owlglass). Sergio Vesely is a Chilean guitarist and musician who first learned music by playing Tyrolean folk songs on accordion. In 1976, he was exiled from Chile after being arrested for political activity and took up residence, and later citizenship, in Germany. He has released over a dozen albums. Kosmisches Karussel (Dr. Owlglass) either refers to an actual historical writer named Hans Erich Blaich who used the name for his political poetry, or it refers to the German comic-trickster character Til Eulenspiegel, whose name translates to Owl-Glass or Owl-Mirror and whose scatological practical jokes amused Germans from the 1500s onward. The song can be found on Sergio Vesely's 1997 album Schwabenserenade eines Hinterweltlers (Vertonung Schwäbischer Lyriker durch einen Chilenen - Extraordinär!)

Today's random tune is by Trio Melodicos, a Cuban trio that I couldn't find too much information on, save that they played classic love songs for a dollar at a famous brothel in Havana, where they were recorded by two Jewish guys who had fled the Nazis and ended up in Cuba. Trio Melodicos here sing a Latin classic song, called Perfidia, written by Mexican composer Alberto Dominguez. It is a song of love and betrayal, and can be found on the 2006 album The Lost Cuban Trios Of Casa Marina, and on the 2015 various artists compilation Putumayo Presents: Vintage Latino.

Waiting Over Coffee: SEVENTEEN and "Falling For U"
We go to South Korea today for some K-Pop with multi-faceted group Seventeen. A boy group formed in 2015 by Pledis Entertainment, Seventeen consists of three sub groups, or units. One unit specializes in hip-hop, another in vocal and the third in performance. Each member of the group is very involved with the composition of music as well as choreography and discography, and therefore the band is considered to be self-producing. The band has released two official albums, though it also released a third which was a previously released album with four new songs included. Today's song, Falling For U, features the talents of the vocal unit, particularly Jeonghan and Joshua, and it can be found on that third album called SEVENTEEN Special Project: Director's Cut, released in 2018.

Misfortune of the Grieving Mother: DeVotchka and "La Llorona"
DeVotchKa, a Denver-based a four piece ensemble, performs our random tune for today. Their name is derived from the Russian word for "girl," and their instrumentation, besides guitar, drums and bass can include theremin, bouzouki, accordion and sousaphone. DeVotchKa started as a backing band for burlesque shows, and in particular traveled with and backed noted burlesque performer Dita von Teese. During this time they were also self-releasing records and touring in support of them which earned them an underground following. The band was eventually picked by the directors of Little Miss Sunshine to score the film which earned them a Grammy nomination for best soundtrack. The band, while essentially a rock ensemble, incorporates a gypsy punk feel into many of its songs. This song, La Llorona, is on their 2003 CD Una Volta. The song title refers to the ghost of the grieving mother in Mexican legend.

Beautiful Bird: Baracutanga and "Peregrina"
Baracutanga, a band out of New Mexico, and their song Peregrina is today's random tune. Made up of musicians from Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and the United States, they are past winners of the New Mexico Music Awards Albuquerque Song Competition. They play infectious music of South America incorporating rhythms of Brazil, Peru, Colombia and more, and their name is an African voicing that means "people dancing," and hearkens back to the percussive instruments brought by Africans to South America. Through their music, they hope to overcome barriers of discrimination by building bridges between the north and south. You can find this song, Peregrina, on their 2015 debut album Importados.

Our song for today is by two legends of Irish music, Liam Clancy & Tommy Makem. Tommy Makem, who died in 2007, was a folk musician, artist, poet and storyteller known as the Bard of Armagh. Internationally acclaimed, he was a member of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. A baritone, he played a number of instruments including 5 string banjo, tin whistle, low whistle, guitar, bodhrán and bagpipes. Missing Home: Värttinä and "Kylän Kävijä"
Finnish band Värttinä brings us today's random tune. Värttinä is a folk group founded in 1983 by sisters Sari and Mari Kaasinen, who had performed together reading poetry in the 1970s. In 1983, the sisters formed Värttinä and entered a youth arts contest with their poetry reading. They made it into the finals that first year, and the next year changed to singing and won the event. They brought on some male members in 1985 and entered the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, becoming known as the group that sings high and loud. Many children in their hometown were now eager to join the band, and finally Värttinä had to establish a new group for the youngest children to join. In 1987, at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, they were chosen "Ensemble of the Year," and in 1988 they released their first album. In the early 1990s, they moved to Helsinki and began training at the Sibelius Academy and perfecting their skills. The band first performed traditional Finnish folk songs, but in the mid-1990s began playing its own original compositions. Over the years the band has had many forms and lineup changes, and is currently made up of three female vocalists and three acoustic musicians. They have performed worldwide to international acclaim and have released 14 albums, including 3 compilation albums and one live CD. You can find this song, Kylän Kävijä, on their 1998 album Vihma. The song is the lament of someone who is a foreigner away from all that is known and dealing with strange ways and customs.

His Father's Strut: Xylouris White and "Psarandonis Syrto"
Today's random tune is by an unlikely duo called Xylouris White. Greek Cretan singer and laouto player Giorgios Xylouris is paired up with Australian drummer Jim White in this song, Psarandonis Syrto. Xylouris, from a musical family, was taught by his uncle to play the laouto, a Cretan instrument, from a young age, and was performing and recording as early as the age of eleven. While the laouto has been generally considered an accompanying instrument, Xylouris performs it solo. Jim White is a drummer best known for his work in the Australian instrumental rock band Dirty Three. As a duo, Xylouris White's music combines free jazz, avant-garde rock and Greek traditional music. You can find Psarandonis Syrto on their 2014 debut album Goats. Psarandonis is the name of Xylouris' father.

Well Shod: Kate Rusby and "The Cobbler's Daughter"
English singer-songwriter Kate Rusby brings us today's random tune. Described as a "superstar" of English acoustic musicians, and often called "the Nightingale of Barnsley" (after her home town), Kate Rusby was born into a musical family and learned to play guitar, fiddle and piano. She became the lead vocalist of the all-female Celtic band The Poozies before she broke through in her own right in 1995 on a collaborative album with fellow Barnsley native folk-songer Kathryn Roberts. She recorded her first solo album, Hourglass, in 1997. She was married in 2001 to Scottish musician and former Battlefield Band member John McCusker. She has since divorced and married Northern Irish musician Damien O'Kane, with whom she has two daughters and a dog named Doris who is often a part of Rusby's stage banter. This song, The Cobbler's Daughter, can be found on Rusby's 1999 album Sleepless.

Kiss Me Mama: Poncho Sanchez with Mongo Santamaria and "Bésamé Mamá"
Today's random song is from Mexican American conga player Poncho Sanchez and Cuban rumba quinto master Mongo Santamaria. Born in Laredo, Texas and raised in California, Sanchez took to Afro-Cuban music and bebop jazz. He originally was a guitarist and singer, and after teaching himself flute, drums and timbales, he settled on the conga as his instrument of choice. He has recorded 35 albums since 1980. Mongo Santamaria was an African-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist whose mix of R&B and Latin rhythms helped inspire the boogaloo of the 1960s. He also was a bandleader, whose bands featured the likes of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, and it was during these times that he began to Afro-Cuban and African American music to great acclaim. This song, Bésamé Mamá, can be found on Poncho Sanchez's 1995 album Conga Blue, and on the various artists compilation CD Putumayo Presents: ¡Latino! ¡Latino! (1997).

A Stone for her Troubles: Cathie Ryan and "At the Foot of Knocknarea"
Our random tune for today is sung by Cathie Ryan! Cathie Ryan is an Irish-American native of Detroit, Michigan who was exposed early to Irish musicians such as Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers, as well as American musicians such as Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and Hank Williams. In her childhood she idolized her father, a tenor, who taught her how to interpret and honor songs by knowing their histories and contexts. She was also exposed to the music of Appalachia from neighbors who had migrated to Michigan to work in the auto factories and she gained an appreciation for the likes of Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, as well as the local music out of Motown. Moving to New York, she learned more about traditional Irish music from her then husband singer-songwriter Dermot Henry and mentor Joe Heaney. After graduating from CUNY with a degree in English Literature and Secondary Education, she began teaching at Lehmann College in the Bronx, but left the classroom behind as her singing career began to blossom. She still continues to teach workshops in traditional Irish singing and Irish mythology and folklore. This song, At the Foot of Knocknarea, can be found on her 1998 album The Music of What Happens.

Pacific Bash: Sudden Rush and "Polynesian Party"
Hawaiian rap and hip hop group Sudden Rush delivers the random song for today. Playing nā mele paleoleo, or a a blend of American hip hop with Hawaiian language and musical styles, Sudden Rush was a pioneer in this contemporary style of Hawaiian music, and the directness of their music goes against the tradition of "hidden meaning," or kaona, conveyed by euphemism and coded metaphor, that is usual in Hawaiian music. Formed in 1993, the group also takes inspiration from past and present Hawaiian colonial history and its current sovereignty movements. This song, Polynesian Party, can be found on their 1997 album Kūʻē and on the 2000 various artists compilation Island Roots.

Nature Knowledge: WAI and "Matauranga"
Our random song for today is called Matauranga, and is performed by New Zealand band WAI. WAI was started in 1999 by Mina Ripia and Maaka McGregor, and they released their debut album in 2000. They were immediately hailed in New Zealand and beyond as groundbreaking and bringing a new sound to music from the Pacific Rim. In 2007, the duo went on hiatus to focus respectively on having a family and to work on new songs for an album. They have since evolved into a five piece outfit that sings in Maori, and uses traditional Maori music as a base to create what they call Maori electronica roots world music which also is infused with jungle, funk, reggae, hip-hop and deep house. You can find Matauranga on their 2000 debut release, WAI 100%. The song's title refers to the Maori knowledge of flora and fauna in their environment.

A Hunter in the Cafe: Leyla McCalla and "Peze Café"
The former cellist with roots group The Carolina Chocolate Drops, brings us today's random tune called Peze Café. American musician Leyla McCalla was born in New York City to Haitian parents and was raised in New Jersey. McCalla also lived in Ghana for two years. After graduating from New York University, where she studied cello performance and chamber music (she also plays guitar and banjo), she moved to New Orleans and was a street musician. Her first solo album was a tribute to the poetry of Langston Hughes which she credits with inspiring her to be an artist. It was five years in the making and was financed by a Kickstarter campaign. She plays music inspired by Haitian folk songs and sung in Haitian creole, as well as Louisiana traditional music such as old Cajun fiddle tunes and trad-jazz. She also writes original compositions. A Day for the Hunter, A Day for the Prey comes from a Haitian proverb, and McCalla told NPR in an interview that it was written while she was thinking of the vulnerability and desperation of the Haitian boat people, as well as Syrian refugees. You can find Peze Café on McCalla's second solo album, A Day for the Hunter, A Day for the Prey, released in 2016.

Again? I Say Yes!: Pink Martini and "Joli Garçon"
Joli Garçon, by Pink Martini, is today's random tune on this Fourth of July. Formed in 1994 in Portland, Oregon by Thomas Lauderdale, Pink Martini was originally created because Lauderdale, who worked in politics, thought that most bands at political functions were loud and boring. He asked a fellow Harvard classmate, China Forbes, to join the band, and their first single, Sympathique, was nominated for song of the year at the Victoires de la Musique awards in France. Described as a little orchestra, the band consists of 10-12 members and features a multilingual repertoire that crosses the lines of jazz, classical, Latin and classic pop. Forbes splits lead singing time with Storm Large. The band has collaborated and performed with many other musicians, and their music has appeared in films and television. You can find Joli Garçon on Pink Martini's 2016 album Je Dis Oui!

When the Night Goes Down: Playing for Change and "Stand by Me"
Today's random song is a classic called Stand by Me. It is performed by Playing for Change, a project to connect the world through music. Created by American producer and sound engineer Mark Johnson, the project records musicians around the world each playing one element of each of the songs they record. The producers then build, layer by layer, the song by melding the recorded parts, each with the individual interpretations of the musicians involved. They have since developed the Playing for Change Band which tours, and they have built the Playing for Change Foundation, which funds the construction of music and art schools around the world. Stand by Me can be found on Playing For Change's 2009 album Songs Around the World. The list of musicians and places where they were recorded on this tune is extensive and are listed in the video.

The Bridge Railings: Los Texmaniacs and "Los Barandales del Puente"
Today's random tune is by Los Texmaniacs. From San Antonio, Texas, Los Texmaniacs were created in 1997 by Max Baca to play traditional conjunto and tejano music but also to incorporate rock and jazz while honoring the old traditions. Baca was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and followed his grandfather and father in learning the accordion beginning at age 5. He was invited by one of his idols, the great Flaco Jiménez, to play in Jiménez' band in San Antonio where he learned to play the bajo sexto (bass) using all six sets of strings in the traditional style. In forming Los Texmaniacs, Baca wanted to keep alive the style of another groundbreaking band, The Texas Tornados. This song, Los Barandales del Puente, can be found on their 2012 CD Texas Towns and Tex-Mex Sounds. The song is that of a lover, asking for one more hug from his girl before taking his leave on the trolley.
