A blog about world and global music from a guy who co-hosts the KUNM Global Music Show, 89.9 FM Albuquerque/Santa Fe, http://www.kunm.org. I post one song a day, with reflections on the music, life, and whatever else comes into my mind.

Ambassador for His People: Aurelio and "Sañanaru"
Today's random song is by Honduran musician and politician Aurelio Martinez, known by his stage name Aurelio. A singer, percussionist and guitarist whose music is in the Garifuna style, he has become the leading Garifuna performer. Known for his powerful and evocative voice, Aurelio captured the attention of Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour, who made him part of his collaborative project and brought Garifuna music to African musicians. The collaboration also awakened new creative ideas in Aurelio, and he recorded an album featuring famous African musicians such as N'Dour and Orchestra Baobab. This song, Sañanaru, is from his 2014 album Lándini, which he describes as the album that captures "the sound of my Garifuna people." Aurelio adds, "“We’re not going to let this culture die. I know I must continue my ancestors’ legacy and find new ways to express it. Few people know about it, but I adore it, and it's something I must share with the world.”
Listen to songs like this and more on the KUNM Global Music Show every Monday night from 10 pm - 1 am Mountain Standard Time. Live streaming, program information and the two-week digital archive can be found at http://www.kunm.org.
