It's a Small World After All: The Semer Ensemble and "Die Welt ist Klein Geworden"

The Semer Ensemble brings us today's random tune, called Die Welt ist Klein Geworden. Inspired by a Jewish record producer in Berlin who recorded Jewish musicians just prior to World War II under his own label called Semer which was ravaged and shut down by the Nazis in 1938. The Semer Ensemble plays the music that was recorded by the label. Almost all the entire catalog was tracked down by a musicologist between 1992 and 2001, and the recordings consist of everything from cabaret, Russian folk songs, Yiddish theater, opera arias and cantorial music. The ensemble consists of musicians from the US, Russia, Germany and Latvia, and boasts Lorin Sklamberg, a founding member of the Klezmatics, as one of its members. Die Welt ist Klein Geworden can be found on the ensemble's 2016 CD Rescued Treasure - Live at Gorki Berlin.

Listen to songs like this and more on the KUNM Global Music Show every Monday night from 10 pm - 1 am Mountain Standard Time. Live streaming, program information and the two-week digital archive can be found at http://www.kunm.org.
